Group karate classes cost about $85 to $120 a month at the US dojos we checked, usually for two classes a week. City recreation programs cost less, often $100 for a session of two to three months. Private lessons run from $40 per half hour to $100 per lesson.
Tuition is only part of the bill, though. Uniforms, belt tests, registration, and tournament fees can add a few hundred dollars a year. This guide breaks down each cost with prices from real schools, so you can budget before your first class.

How Much Does Karate Cost per Month?
Most karate schools charge a flat monthly fee rather than a price per class. That fee usually covers two or three group classes a week. Here is what five real programs charge, from private dojos to city-run classes.
Prices
Karate Tuition at Real US Schools
| School | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| East Valley Martial Arts, Mesa, AZ | $120 a month | Two classes a week, kids 7–12 or teens and adults |
| Shotokan Karate Minnesota, Minneapolis | $100 a month adults, $85 children | Regular group classes, no contract |
| SoCal Karate Kids, California | $240 – $300 every two months | One class a week, or unlimited classes |
| Republic Parks, MO (Okinawan karate) | $100 per two-month session | Two 90-minute classes a week, ages 6 and up |
| City of Mont Belvieu, TX | $100 per 13-week program | One class a week, ages 5 and up |

Private dojos cluster around $100 a month, while community programs cost far less. The gap comes down to schedule, facilities, and how often you can train.
Uniforms, belt testing, and registration fees are rarely included in the monthly price. Ask each school for a full list of fees before you sign up.

Monthly Tuition vs. Paying by the Class
A monthly fee is easier to compare once you work out the price of each class. At East Valley Martial Arts, $120 for two classes a week comes to about $15 per class. The Republic, Missouri, program offers two 90-minute classes a week for $100 per two-month session. That works out to roughly $6 a class. The city runs five sessions a year, so a full year of classes costs about $500.
Unlimited plans change the math again. SoCal Karate Kids charges $240 every two months for one class a week, or $300 for unlimited classes. If you train three or more times a week, the unlimited plan quickly becomes the better deal.
Community Programs vs. Private Dojos
City parks departments often run the most affordable karate classes. Mont Belvieu, Texas, charges $100 for a 13-week program with one class a week. These classes suit beginners who want to try the sport without a big commitment.
Private dojos cost more, but they usually offer more class times, belt programs, and experienced instructors. Many also teach several age groups, so a whole family can train in one place.
How Much Are Private Karate Lessons?
Private karate lessons cost more per hour than group classes, but you get the instructor’s full attention. East Valley Martial Arts charges $40 for a half-hour session, or $140 for a pack of four. SoCal Karate Kids lists private lessons at $100 per lesson.
Private sessions work well for students preparing for a belt test or catching up after time off. Most people combine them with regular group classes rather than training one-on-one alone.
What Extra Costs Come With Karate?
The monthly fee rarely tells the whole story. These are the extra costs that show up most often at karate schools.
- Uniform (gi): about $50 at city programs in Missouri and Texas. Century Martial Arts sells a lightweight student uniform for $53.99, and heavyweight uniforms cost $129.99 or more.
- Belt testing: East Valley Martial Arts charges $35 for each of the first four tests, then $45. SoCal Karate Kids charges $40 to $85 per test, and advanced black belt tests can cost $3,000 or more.
- Registration: East Valley Martial Arts charges $120 per program, waived if you prepay for a year.
- USA Karate membership: the national governing body lists an athlete membership at $60 a year. Its 2024 membership levels ranged from $20 to $60.
- Tournaments: the 2025 USA Karate National Championships charged $110 for a first division and $70 for each extra one. Late entries paid $50 more.
You only need a USA Karate membership if you plan to compete in its events. Its FAQ notes that each student needs an individual athlete membership to register for tournaments.
USA Karate now sorts individual members into four levels. Level 1 suits people who are new to karate or simply want to support the sport. Level 2 covers local and regional events, Level 3 national events, and Level 4 international competition. Each individual membership is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.
Do Kids’ Karate Classes Cost Less Than Adult Classes?
Kids’ classes often cost a little less, and family discounts can cut the bill further. Shotokan Karate Minnesota charges $100 a month for adults and $85 for children. Each additional child costs $40 a month, and an additional adult costs $50.
Other schools charge the same for every age. East Valley Martial Arts lists $120 a month for both kids and adults. For the youngest students, SoCal Karate Kids runs toddler classes for ages 3 to 5 at $90 every two months. The Republic, Missouri, program charges $85 instead of $100 for each extra family member.
Contracts, Trial Classes, and Discounts
Before you commit, ask whether the school requires a contract. Shotokan Karate Minnesota and East Valley Martial Arts both state that they have no contracts. Month-to-month tuition lets you stop if karate turns out not to be the right fit.
Trial classes are the cheapest way to test a school. Blue Life Karate in Maplewood, New Jersey, offers children a free one-week trial with two classes. East Valley Martial Arts charges $30 for an introductory week of two classes.
Discounts reward commitment. East Valley Martial Arts offers a year of tuition for $1,200 paid in full, instead of $1,440 at the monthly rate. It also gives a 10% discount to military and law enforcement families.
When you visit a school, ask three questions. What does the monthly fee include? How often are belt tests, and what does each one cost? Does the uniform come with registration, or is it extra? The answers show you the real yearly cost, not just the monthly price.
Does the Karate Style Change the Price?
The style of karate matters less to the price than the type of school. A Shotokan dojo in Minneapolis and an Okinawan karate program in Missouri both charge about $100. One is a private dojo, and the other runs through the city parks department.
Style can affect your gear, though. Kyokushin, a full-contact style, often uses a heavier uniform. Century Martial Arts sells Kyokushin uniforms from about $66 to $111. Every style shares the same goal, which the founder of Shotokan karate summed up this way.
The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants.
