Being highly skilled at math can open many doors for you in the future. There are many high-paying jobs that require that their employees have an excellent understanding of math. Luckily for you, if you are taking Honors Math or even AP math classes or thinking about taking these courses then you probably have those great math skills to find a job to offer you the big bucks. While you are still in high school, you still have a ways to go before earning that paycheck and how you study and score in exams will be incredibly important.
Earning grades in Honors Math and AP classes will be really crucial to you as you will become increasingly attractive to colleges who are considering students for scholarships at their college or university.
During your sophomore, junior, and senior years you’ll be faced with many different life choices. You’ll need to think about what college you’ll want to go to, where you’ll want to go to college, do you want to study out of state, far away from home, or even abroad in another country for a semester or two. A very important question as you are studying in high school will be what major you would like to study once you get to college.
Of course, it is always possible to change your major, however, if you’ve always been skilled at math and are doing fine in Honors Math and AP Calculus or statistics, a major in math will take you a long way! We’re going to go over different types of majors you can take in college that will ensure you have an excellent career using your mathematical knowledge.
STEM Majors
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. While you are in high school and if you are taking Honors Math and AP Math classes you will be set up for these fields of study during your college years. These fields of study offer you a large variety of majors that are highly valuable to put on your resume once you begin searching for employment after your years of study. Taking Honors math and AP math classes will help you in the best way to prepare for these majors.
- Health Sciences
- Earth Sciences
- Computer Science
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Mathematics
Taking a closer look at these fields of study, those who go on to take a STEM major make on average over 85 thousand dollars a year, which is much higher than the average salary nationwide. As you can tell by now, being good at math goes a long way to having a successful career.
Majors in fields of Business and Economics

Let’s say you aren’t totally into the sciences or becoming a math professor or teacher. Maybe you’re a fan of the film The Wolf of Wall Street and want to get involved in Wall Street. Then I have great news for you. For those who have high math skills and take Honors math, you can be set up for some fields of study such as:
- Accounting
- Business
- Economics
Major in Accounting
If you decide to take accounting as your major in college you will learn how to maintain financial accounts, as well as accurately audit a detailed system that shows the finances of a business or organization.
Major in Business
Students who study a major will study topics such as economics, accounting, management, marketing. Also, in a business major, if you decide to take it, you will learn other concepts such as business knowledge in accounting, international business, finance, marketing, and project management.
Major in Economics
Another major field of study in Economics. Studying a major in economics can lead to a lot of job offers from high-paying businesses and firms. An economics major researches different concepts such as resource allocation, incentives, and wealth in areas such as business management, law, and public affairs.
Potential Careers with a Major that uses Math

With all of the excellent mathematical-focused majors out there, of course, it means people with mathematical skills are in high demand, and in various specialties. As shown above there is a vast array of fields of study that offer different types of career paths, from working with computers to international business, to medicine, to physics. All of these different career paths can lead you to have a great salary and quality of life down the road. Let’s have a look at some specific career paths you can have if you take a major that has a heavy focus on mathematics.
Auditor
Auditors are people who prepare and research financial records and check to see if they are accurate, then need to explain what they find to stakeholders. There are both internal and external auditors, internal auditors check to see if there has been any mismanagement of a business’s funds, while external auditors do the same but are employed by an outside organization. There are also information technology auditors that check an organization’s computer systems.
If you are an auditor you can expect to make over 70 thousand dollars a year on average.
Computer Programmer
Programmers write code for computer applications and software programs. They also update programs that already exist. Taking Computer Science as a major in university will help give you a background in C++ and Java to go along with your advanced math skills. Computer programmers can expect to make over 80 thousand dollars a year on average.
Statistician
Statisticians develop mathematical theories to resolve problems. Having a background in math will be absolutely important, taking Honors Math and AP statistics will help you to begin to prepare for studying a major in statistics. Statisticians design surveys, opinion polls to collect data, then use the data they collect to report a conclusion. If you end up with a job as a statistician you can earn over 85 thousand dollars a year on average.
Software Developer
Just as the name describes, if you are a Software Developer you are responsible for the development of a software program. They design and develop software based on users’ needs. Software Developers design computer applications, as well as create computer systems. It is a really interesting job, and you can earn over 100 thousand dollars a year doing it.
Economist
Economists obviously study....the economy! Economists analyze the production and distribution of goods, and services, as well as analyze trends and cycles. Being an Economist can also help you earn a lot of dough. The median salary of an Economist is over 100 thousand dollars per year.
Actuary
A really important job for businesses is an Actuary. What you have to do in this job is analyze the financial costs of risk using math. Businesses naturally want to minimize any risk, therefore Actuaries help them to do that. Having a math background is very important to this career, and thanks to your math skills, if you choose to become an Actuary you can make over 100 thousand dollars a year.
How can you choose your major?

As you can see, with a good mathematical background you will have quite a variety of options to choose from when it comes to picking colleges and majors. There are some colleges that offer a higher quality of education in a certain field of study than others. Taking advantage and studying a lot during Honors Math will help you to get into a university with a great reputation for math majors. Some universities have a better reputation in economics and business than others, while others may be better at computer programming.
Choosing a major depends on what your interests and strengths are. If you are great at math but hate computers, or developing software then perhaps a major in Computer Science isn’t for you. If you’re more of a fan of graphing and analyzing data perhaps a career as an Auditor or Statistician is a better choice. It is always a good idea to talk with your teachers and parents about what your interests are, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of one major versus another.
You can also look at the classes you would need to take to earn enough credits to get your bachelor’s degree in your field of study. There may be a lot of classes you don’t wish to take as in one major versus another. Majoring in one mathematical field of study, while minoring in another is always an option as well.
A field of mathematical studies will give you a lot of different options in the future, and be sought after by plenty of businesses and companies that will require your skills.
