How to Enter the 2026 Sydney Marathon
Getting into the Sydney Marathon is competitive. Just like the other world majors, getting in requires a bit of luck and lots of planning.
The window for ballot entry closed in October 2025, so if you still hope to make the 2026 race, you’ll need to seek an alternative route.
Here, we’ll discuss the remaining entry pathways for runners to get into the 2026 marathon, as well as what you need to consider if you want to try for the 2027 Sydney Marathon.
All racers must be at least 18 years old on event day.

General Ballot Entry
Most runners enter the Sydney Marathon through the general ballot, which is a lottery system. Entries far exceed the field limit, so getting selected for a place is a big gamble. According to reports about the 2025 ballot, over 120,000 applications were submitted for only 40,000 spots.
Ballots are drawn at random; it is not a first-come, first-served system. Runners who were not chosen in the ballot can try to use the charity places or sports tour entry pathways.

The general ballot for the 2026 Sydney Marathon closed in October 2025.
Entry into the general ballot is free. You’ll only be charged the entry fee if your name is selected (AUD $330, about USD $230).
High Performance Program
The Sydney Marathon offers high-performing athletes a better chance than the general ballot to earn a place in the race. Runners who complete an AIMS-certified marathon within the qualifying window (for the 2026 marathon, that was between July 1, 2024, and registration cut-off on October 17, 2025) with a qualifying time can apply for the program.
For both the 2026 and 2027 marathons, the qualifying times are as follows:
| Age Group | Men | Women | Non-Binary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–34 | 2:53:00 | 3:13:00 | 3:13:00 |
| 35–39 | 2:55:00 | 3:15:00 | 3:15:00 |
| 40–44 | 2:58:00 | 3:26:00 | 3:26:00 |
| 45–49 | 3:05:00 | 3:38:00 | 3:38:00 |
| 50–54 | 3:14:00 | 3:51:00 | 3:51:00 |
| 55–59 | 3:23:00 | 4:10:00 | 4:10:00 |
| 60–64 | 3:34:00 | 4:27:00 | 4:27:00 |
| 65–69 | 3:45:00 | 4:50:00 | 4:50:00 |
| 70–74 | 4:10:00 | 5:30:00 | 5:30:00 |
| 75–79 | 4:30:00 | 6:00:00 | 6:00:00 |
| 80+ | 4:55:00 | 6:35:00 | 6:35:00 |
Only the fastest runners for each group will be selected due to field size limits. If you are not selected for the HPP program, you are automatically entered into the general ballot.

Charity Program
Most of the world’s major marathons include charity places as a method for runners to secure a place.
Runners who want to secure a charity place must sign up through the official Sydney Marathon website with a partnered charity. They will need to commit to raising a minimum amount for the cause, usually at least AUD $3,000 (about USD $2,100). Some charities fill up fast, so if you have a specific one you want to run for, make sure you sign up early!

In 2026, the headlining charities are Running for Premature Babies and the We Run Foundation. There are hundreds of other Australia and New Zealand-based charities, as well as international charities, still accepting applications, which means you can secure a place in the 2026 marathon! All you need to do is meet the minimum fundraising commitment.
Travel Packages
Another guaranteed entry path into the marathon is to purchase a spot through a tour company partnered with the race.

Official travel packages through Marathon Tours & Travel USA, Fitness International Travel, I Run The Globe, and Sports Tourism International include hotel booking, entry into the race, and travel assistance.
It’s an extremely pricey option, ranging from $1,300 to $7,500 per person (not including airfare).
Using a tour package comes with the benefit of guaranteeing your entry into the race and taking care of accommodations at the same time.
Some tour companies also offer add-ons, such as walking tours of the city or additional nights. Most offer 5 to 7 nights of stay.
Seven Rewards Program
Signing up for the Seven Rewards program gives you access to giveaways throughout the year. These giveaways often grant winners extra entries into the general ballot when it opens. It’s not a guaranteed entry, but it can give you a little boost in the lottery.

Race Day Schedule
Runners will receive personalized instructions about how to arrive at the start line via email, or they can log into the official website with their confirmation number. Athletes can use their bibs for free transportation, making it as easy as possible to get to the starting area.
Runners should pick up their bibs and drop off their belongings for the finish line at the Expo (called the Running Show) on the days leading up to the event. Runner Cut-Off Times
The Sydney Marathon has a 7-hour cut-off time oriented to the 8:15 AM final start time; all racers must cross the finish by 3:15 PM.
To enforce the pace, there are 9 cut-off time checkpoints along the course. Racers who arrive at these points after the cut-off time are given the choice to redirect to a point further along in the course (made possible due to all the switchbacks) or drop out of the race. Cut-off times are calculated using a 10-minute-per-kilometer pace.
| Location | Distance Point | Cut-Off Time (From Gun Time) | Redirection Point | Leg Skipped | Distance Skipped |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start Line | 0 km | - | None; you will not be able to start the race after 8:15 AM | - | - |

Athletes who lag too far behind will need to cooperate and be picked up by Tail Control after two warnings. Tail Control is a small minibus that picks up runners and brings them to the finish line. There, you can get any medical attention or other assistance you might need.
Runners are given chances to keep going, though they will not be regarded as an official finisher if they are redirected.

Post-Race Activities
The marathon experience doesn’t end when you cross the finish line. Sydney is known for offering lots of activities and celebrations for both runners and spectators long after the race’s end. As an athlete, you’ll also have lots of choices for recovery.
Recovery Tips

You’ll receive hydrating drinks and some snacks. You can pick up your bag with your personal snacks or protein bars and any other recovery items you packed.
Beyond what’s supplied by the venue, here are some important tips for what to do to help your body recover:
- Keep moving - keep walking at a slow pace for at least a few minutes, rather than stopping suddenly.
- Hydrate - Drink water and an electrolyte beverage.
- Stretch - Gently stretch your entire body.
- Refuel - Eat a substantial, balanced meal. This is the perfect time to check out a local restaurant!
- Rest - Plan to have at least a day or two of rest afterward, full of more gentle movement, stretching, hydration, and good nutrition.
Keep these tips in mind for other races, such as the Tokyo Marathon.

Celebrations and Events
Before crashing for the night, many runners explore the waterfront and parks with their family and friends. They make for great photo opportunities!
There are also usually many activities and sponsored events taking place near the finish line. Stick around for medal ceremonies and post-race gatherings near the Opera House. Then, visit local eateries and see what special offerings they’ve prepared for runners.
Sydney Marathon History
The Sydney Marathon was first held on April 30, 2000, as part of the Olympic Games. It’s been an annual tradition since. But in 2024, the course was certified and accepted into the World Marathon Majors, meaning 2026 is only the second time anyone has been able to run the current version of the course.
Therefore, the current course records are the only ones available from 2025. They are:
- Men’s: 2:06:06 by Hailemaryam Kiros of Ethiopia
- Women’s: 2:18:22 Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands
The 2026 race will see many people attempting to break these course records, so it will be an exciting event!
