While some in the conservative crowd may try and deny that this is true, society isn’t exactly 100% equal between men and women. Of course, we can take that a step further and talk about equality between race, sexual orientation, and more.

In this case between men and women, history will show us that women have had to struggle for many of the rights that the girls and women of this generation can enjoy today.

Of course, there is still a feminist movement that is happening today, and not just one with one general idea, there are various ideologies that drive different feminist ideas.

So how have all of these ideas started and what have they led us to today?

We still need to say that women need to fight for more equality, that is for sure. There is a huge difference between men and women in terms of the richest people in the United States and around the world, the number of male politicians vs female politicians, as well as heads of state. There is still a lot left to be desired.

However, thanks to all of the feminist movements that were created and famous feminist leaders in the past many women can enjoy the benefits of their hard work and of course be able to look towards the future with the hope of being able to change society for the better.

What benefits has feminism brought to females everywhere? How were they able to change societal norms so that women could be who they want to be today?

How the Feminist Movement Became What it Is Today

Feminism is of course an ideology and a movement not just an event. It has been taking shape and progressing for a very long time. Today we see how feminism has become mainstream when a couple of centuries ago or even decades it was seen as extremely radical.

So how did feminism get this way? Celebrities such as singers and actresses are really big fans of screaming “Girl Power!” and attending feminist rallies and are often even becoming self-proclaimed women’s rights activists.

All of these developments are amazing considering the few rights that women had in the 19th century and even early 20th century.

What events took place to get us to see the benefits that we see in society today

Age of Enlightenment

The age of enlightenment did what is in the same.. enlighten people. After the American Revolution at the end of the 18th century, people in Europe started to believe in a life where they had more autonomy instead of just serving a king and queen.

With that way of thinking emerging in countries around Europe at that time, above all in France and other Western European kingdoms ideas of equality for women began to grow.

Back in those times, women could do very little apart from staying at home, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. However, at this time women, philosophers and writers began to publish works that would become famous.

Mary Wollstonecraft from England published work that challenged other thinkers whose ideas were that women were inferior to men and became a distinguished author. Sojourner Truth who was an American female abolitionist inspired many by fighting both gender and racial discrimination. It was a time not only for female advocacy but also a time where black thinkers began to fight against discrimination and slavery in the United States.

These are just a couple of the feminist thinkers during this time. While a proper movement never began during the 19th-century famous feminists such as these two began to inspire more feminist movements centuries later.

Modern Feminist Movements

A long time after the age of enlightenment and the published works and advocacy of individual women around the world, decades later we would see organized feminist movements begin to appear.

The largest and most successful early feminist movement was the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

This began during the 19th century, and if you could believe it, during this time women in the United States were still not able to vote. The only ones who could easily cast a vote in the United States were white men.

The nineteenth amendment was eventually put into effect and women were allowed to vote in the United States. This would eventually influence women around the globe as well as future generations.

Different Types of Feminism

Feminism is a generic term for describing someone who advocates for women’s rights and equality between men and women in society.

While basically all feminists are trying to achieve this goal different ideologies began to form since the days of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.

During the late 1960s, different social movements began to take place. Advocacy for rights for different groups based on race, sexual orientation, and gender began to appear and become very organized as well.

Different feminist ideologies began to appear firstly radical feminism appeared in the late 1960s then slowly but surely more feminist ideologies began to form from the basis of the ideology of radical feminism.

These ideologies include:

  • Liberal Feminism
  • Cultural Feminism
  • Eco-Feminism
  • Racial Feminism
  • Marxist Feminism

All have the same goal of gaining equal rights and stopping the oppression of women. Thanks to these feminist ideas and movements many benefits have come from these ideologies and activists and females have more rights thanks to it.

Benefits of Feminism

So how exactly has feminism benefited society and women not only in the United States and around the world? Not only is it enough to talk about some of the changes in laws that restricted women but also how women are viewed in society as well as treated.

It has made a lot of social change, and we were able to see the social change thanks to the movements that have appeared over time.

So what are some of the things that feminism has improved for women everywhere, what laws have changed so that women are given much more equality?

The right to vote

In 1920 women were finally guaranteed the right to vote. Before this, the women’s suffrage movement secured minor victories such as changing the words from “male” to “citizen” so that it included women in the constitution as citizens of the United States as well as freed slaves thanks to the fourteenth amendment. In 1920 the nineteenth amendment finally guaranteed that women had the right to vote in the United States.

Equal Pay

Women in the workplace for many years were not seen or paid as equal. For women who found themselves in the workplace just as colored people they were not earning the same wages as white men for the same amount of work.

Thanks to the Equal Pay Act of 1963 all people were promised equitable wages for the same work whether they be female, a person of color, etc.

End of discrimination in the workplace

While of course, these things happen at workplaces where people do not come forward to denounce their employer, it shouldn’t happen and it was made illegal in 1964 for someone to be discriminated against in the workplace due to their sex.

Legal abortion

While this is highly contested to this day depending on the state, abortion became legal in the United States thanks to the landmark Roe vs. Wade case. Before this abortion was illegal and women who felt they needed an abortion would end up doing so by unsafe means, abortion clinics have been created and all women have the legal right to a safe abortion throughout the United States.

These are just some of the benefits that feminism has brought to women, of course, the word benefit, in this case, we must recognize are rights. The benefits are thanks to all of the hard work that women’s rights groups have fought for.
