Different types of lawyers that are in demand in the United States

Most fields of law nowadays will be in-demand, especially if you live in a larger city. Many people will need help with something so that don't make mistakes, can gain something, or get out of trouble.

Even in smaller areas, you can find a few different areas of the law that you will be able to find clients in.

Which types of lawyers are most contracted nowadays in the United States?

Family Lawyers

The first on the list (that isn't in any real specific order) is family law. As the name suggests as a family attorney you would be dealing with matters that deal with members of the family as well as all types of matters that families usually go through together or unfortunately apart.

Families hire lawyers who specialize in these things to settle matters for when a family member dies, or perhaps when a family goes through a divorce.

As a family lawyer, you wouldn't necessarily be making huge amounts of money compared to other types of lawyers, especially those with rich and or famous clients, however, you will still make a good salary in the United States wherever you are.

Family lawyers are usually called upon when dealing with:

  • Child custody disputes
  • Distribution of property after death
  • Wills
  • Divorce

Apart from that when you become a family lawyer you do of course many times become entrusted by the family and that can lead you to become the lawyer of the family in other types of issues, including in criminal court.

If you are looking to keep busy, wherever you are, you should be able to find plenty of work as a family lawyer due to that type of client being available all over the United States in rural, suburban, and urban communities.

Employment Lawyers

Just like family law, employment law has clients available in every part of the country. As long as people are working you should be able to find someone that will need a lawyer to represent them.

Jobs have employers, employees, trade unions, and they all need someone in-between to help them negotiate the messy stuff.

Employment lawyers are contracted many times to make sure that employers live up to all of the promises in a contract and protect them from any unfair firings, as well as there to sue the company if the employee is treated unfairly.

All over the United States, people are employed by small businesses, large chains, or corporations, having a lawyer who specializes in employment will hold everyone in these types of businesses accountable.

Corporate Lawyers

This field of law is not only really popular but also pays pretty well. Corporations and companies also rely on lawyers to handle a lot of the legal stuff that comes with transactions, contracts, commerce, and more.

Over the last few years, the demand for corporate lawyers has been rising.

Aside from helping businesses at a basic level, they are heavily involved when large corporations acquire assets and other businesses as well as with mergers.

Like employment lawyers protect employees, corporate lawyers look to protect the interests of corporations.

They usually deal with labor issues as well as deal with any problems that may bring problems to the corporation or business.

Corporate is a great way to find clients across the United States as this country is arguably the best when it comes to people being able to start and run their own businesses wherever they are in the country. Corporate lawyers can help them do just that as well as give the advice to protect them from any problem.

The same goes for any corporation that is already a large corporation. You may just be called in to represent a large corporation to handle a merger and make yourself plenty of big paydays throughout the year.

Tax Lawyers

A tax lawyer is someone that is called into action quite a lot. Death and taxes the only thing that is assured in life and people find themselves with some problems with the taxman.

If you are a tax lawyer you will be in charge of helping people get out of any tax problems they may have due to a mistake that was made while filing or any overdue fees.

It isn't always the most exciting field of law, however in any area of the country and anyone who is working may have a problem with their taxes and it can be your job to lend them a helping hand.

How to choose the field of law you want to work in

Now that we've covered some of the most in-demand fields of law in the United States you may be wondering how to pick one. Of course, there are a few factors that are extremely important when choosing what is the exact specialty of law you want to work in.

Where you want to live

One thing for you to consider is where you want to live. That answer maybe if you would like to stay in your home state/ city or you want to move out into a bigger city or maybe to a more suburban or rural area.

If you want to try and make it in a larger city like New York, Miami, or Chicago, the most potential for you would be in corporate law. Loads of large corporations and businesses call large cities like New York or LA, home. You would have the potential to be a lawyer for a really large corporation and make quite a bit of money.

If you would like to live in a more suburban area family law would be a great idea as the suburbs are full of families.

Then of course remember you would need to pass the bar exam in whatever state you choose to practice law in.

What type of law interests you

Making money is one of the most important things, if not the most important when it comes to choosing what type of law you want to practice.

However, your personal interests shouldn't be ignored.

Perhaps you feel you would be doing something good working for a family and prefer to do that than corporate law.

Therefore you should focus your learning on that type of law and specialize in family law.

If you have decided what type of law you would like to specialize in and you plan to focus on it in law school, hiring a tutor can help you stay on track. Superprof has many qualified tutors that know about the law and these tutors can help you learn and study while you're in law school.
