If you want to work in education you will have a good chance of finding some kind of work anywhere you go in the United States. If you go to a rural area, suburban area, or of course, a big city you'll be able to find students that are in need of tutors.

People who want to be teachers in the United States have to study for a bachelor's degree in college then do a master's degree which focuses on teaching and teaching basically what their college major was.

While this is an amazing career choice, not everyone who wants to work in the field of education wants to be teaching in a classroom. As amazing as it is to work with students of any age, it can be tiring to some, and working in a school and school district means you won't have total freedom regarding what you teach your students.

So what about private tutoring in the United States?

While there are positives and negatives to everything, tutoring can be a great idea for those who would like to work with students however don't want to work in a classroom setting.

Then there are those of you who may be completing your master's degree in teaching and want to do something on the side that can you get you some money and also give you teaching experience.

In any case, private tutoring is a great opportunity for you to earn some extra money and be able to more or less set your own hours.

If you live in a large city like Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, or New York City you won't have trouble finding a few students that need some extra academic help.

New York has countless elementary schools, high schools, and colleges, and universities, meaning there are many students who will be in need and within a distance of where you live.

For many people that want to get into tutoring and are reading this blog, you may be doing so nervously or very excitedly. If you haven't looked into tutoring that much you will notice that tutoring can present some significant challenges as well as some cool opportunities for you.

What challenges and benefits can you have as a tutor working in New York City?

Positives of tutoring

There are a number of positives that you can expect if you decide to become a private tutor in the New York City area. Perhaps it will be your first time living in New York, or maybe you are a New York native looking for some work.

So here are the positives:

  • Many schools and colleges
  • Public transportation
  • You get to live in a large city

So those three things are probably the biggest positives for you as a tutor in New York.

There are many elementary schools, high schools, and universities, which means you will have a lot of educational resources to work with as well as a large number of potential students (or clients however you choose to look at them).

Then whatever borough you happen to live in, except Staten Island, you will have ways of getting around your neighborhood or moving to another neighborhood to be able to meet your students to teach the classes. A useful tip regarding that would be to try and live in an area where there are a number of schools or live near a college or university.

That way you'll be able to market yourself to clients.

New York has that advantage over cities like Atlanta and Houston that are more spread out cities.

Then of course you can use tutoring to get some money while living in New York! Maybe you are there to study and need some extra cash or just want some experience as a teacher. New York is an amazing city to live in and full of opportunities, if you would like to work full-time as a tutor or start your own tutoring business or eventually become a teacher, then New York City is the perfect place to start off.

Negatives of tutoring in NYC

While there are good reasons to tutor in New York you do need to be prepared for the negative circumstances that happen, unfortunately as great as New York can be there are certain drawbacks, and more so if you want to work as a private tutor.

  • New York is very big
  • New York is expensive

The two negative things about tutoring in a city like New York or Los Angeles and large modern cities are the two things that you'll need to overcome if you want to find success as a private tutor in NYC.

New York is great, with tons of things to do, however, it is also really expensive. It is expensive to move around, go out, buy food, and most important rent an apartment or buy a home. If you are looking to work full-time as a tutor, you will need a good plan for making enough money to pay all the bills.

If you are just looking at working part-time you will need to have another source of income while you are working as a tutor in New York.

While New York has a lot of schools and universities you may have potential students that would wish to work with you that are really far away. Going from one end of the city to another could take over an hour alone and therefore you wouldn't be able to meet with other students, which would make you raise your prices and potentially lose clients.

However, there is a solution to this if you run into this problem!

Online tutoring

Online tutoring is a great idea if you can't make it to meet someone for a tutoring session for whatever reason, distance, time, or maybe this student just doesn't want to meet in person for a tutoring session.

Online tutoring has become more and more popular over the past year and a half due to the COVID-19 situation, however, it has always been an amazing way to have an online class without having to go through the effort of leaving your home.

Marketing yourself in New York City

Another important positive in New York City is you will have the ability to market yourself, and you can market yourself just about anywhere in the city.

It will be important for you to build up a client base and you can find loads of places that can help you out, especially for a special price.

So how can you market yourself to students around the city?

Market yourself in publications

New York has quite a few publications, such as newspapers and magazines. Putting your face and your tutoring service, and contact information will get you some clients right away.

The best idea would be to do some research and find out what newspapers or magazines parents like to read and make sure you get your tutoring service all over it.

Then of course you should also make sure you put out ads in college and high school newspapers and magazines. That way older students who would like tutoring or need tutoring can also contact you about your tutoring service.

If they happen to live in a part of the city that is far away, don't worry, just make sure online classes are part of your advertisements.

You can also put an advertisement on the bus or train which will make sure thousands of people a day can see it.

Posters

Posters are another great way of advertising your tutoring services. This can be especially easy to do, and cheaper than putting an ad in the newspaper or a magazine. All you have to do is of course create a poster, which you can easily do on your laptop or computer then go to a copy place and print out loads of copies.

If you would like to go through the effort of going all over New York and putting posters you can! However, make sure you put the most in your own neighborhood and the neighborhoods around where you will be tutoring.

Tutoring Platform

A tutoring platform is another great way to market yourself as a tutor. People who look for a tutor only need to log in and search for the tutor of the subject that they want to study.

Your name will be one of the ones that appear especially if you can tutor multiple subjects and it can be an easier way of finding clients.

Superprof is a great platform to use and using Superprof many people will be able to find you and choose you as their tutor.
