Of all the social networks on the web, Pinterest is probably the one that you haven’t heard of, especially if you don’t search for images very often. With 250 million users, however, this network is in the top 10 most used of 2018.

The principle is simple, share photos. The users pin photos and create a photo album. Pinterest defines itself as an inspiration search engine.

However, Pinterest is also a huge social media platform that can be used for content marketing and creating a professional network. Pinterest is a social network that’s both professional and personal.

In this article, Superprof is looking at Pinterest, how to create an account, how to use the network, how to add photos, etc.

What Is Pinterest Most Used For?

Whether you are an individual using the World Wide Web for personal inspiration or a business owner looking to secure your future in an industry largely dictated by technology and trends, Pinterest is something that you should take note of. Now!

Interior Design

Where is the first place you look when you want some inspiration on how to decorate your living space or bedroom? Do you go straight to Debenhams or John Lewis to look at fabrics and curtains or to the DIY store in search of the perfect paint colour? Any Pinterest fan will tell you that the only place to go is onto the Pinterest app and to type in your keywords. And, if you haven't used Pinterest before, you will never look back from this moment on!

A simple search of 'living room decor' or, more specifically 'blue and yellow living rooms', for example, will reveal hundreds and hundreds of related images for you to scroll through, many of which are linked up to the relevant suppliers so that you can immediately purchase what you see.

Using the pins feature means you can also save a virtual pinboard for different rooms, theme ideas and more to return to at a later date.

As so well said by Designinside.com: "Inspiration images are a fun and important part of any project, especially when you use Pinterest for interior design inspiration. It’s one of the most exciting phases of the interior design or home remodelling process. It’s where everyone in the household can select images that really inspire them and excite them. And now, thanks to technology, there’s a wealth of design inspiration out there at your fingertips."

Let's face it, not many people have the time or the willpower to walk around the shops, and with our high streets losing shops as each month passes, not all of us have the facilities to go shopping in our local town. As such, more and more people are turning to the Internet to buy their clothes, but it doesn't end there. Clothing chains find that sales come hand in hand with celebrities being seen wearing their items or clothes in the same style. This is why influencers and celebrities play a big part in the high street fashion industry.

Upon leaving the island, Love Island stars Molly-Mae, Maura and the show's winner Amber, were all snapped up by big-time fashion brands such as Boohoo.com and Pretty Little Thing, which means that anything they model will most likely sell out in hours on the brands' websites. Pinterest is an amazing tool for these fashion brands because as well as having social media sites to thank for showcasing their brands, they can also place adverts on Pinterest feeds or add links to any related material that people engage with as they scroll through images.

Furthermore, Pinterest is changing the way we shop as customers.

With Pinterest, you can shop strategically by choosing looks for every season, activity or event and sort these into appropriate categories. Having these boards can, in fact, help you to narrow down what it is you want for your wardrobe, as opposed to getting distracted when you enter a real-life store and buying things you hadn't originally set out to buy. What's more, as well as resisting temptation and thus saving money, you are also allowing yourself to create a solid identity by really thinking through your style inspiration.

Some Pinterest users even set up a board of items they want to buy and outfits they want to wear during different seasons and constantly refer back to them when going out or heading off on shopping trips. Pinterest can literally be there to make fashion decisions for you and keep you on track with your spending.

Hair and Beauty

Much like with fashion, many people rely on the uploaded styles found on Pinterest before heading to the salon for their next appointment. Bob, lob, asymmetric, choppy, frizzy... you can search for any kind of style you like on Pinterest and it's like sitting in front of a brochure in the hairdressers. This time, though, you get time to plan and to contemplate your new look.

With such reliance on Pinterest, hairdressing salons should be making use of the app in every way possible. Salonnerds.com explains on its site why it thinks this is so vital:

"5 Reasons why Every Hair Salon Should Use Pinterest

Low Maintenance – Using Pinterest is really easy and requires very minimal maintenance. Where in Facebook and Twitter you’re keeping track of comments and shares; with Pinterest you upload a beautiful image, tag it with proper tags and add a good description. Then just sit back and let the Pinterest Community do it’s thing.
Connect Visually – Stylists are visual people. What you do is extremely difficult and requires great judgement and excellent execution. Your customers want to walk out feeling great so if you can give them that confidence before they even book an appointment, you’ve already completed one extra step in the sales process.
Increase Sales – If your salon sells hair care products, you can definitely take advantage of the traffic Pinterest can generate. I’ve explained how to do this near the end of this post. As a side note though; the products you sell shouldn’t be items you can easily find in a drugstore or supermarket. I personally love the Kevin Murphy Night Rider texture paste. It’s something that I either have to find through my stylist or buy online.
Inspire and Get New Customers – No one really goes onto Pinterest to buy something. They’re generally there to get ideas, and be inspired. The beauty industry has always had the opportunity to inspire but more so now than before. With images of cuts and styles and coloring that you’ve done in the past, you can potentially move a customer to take action when they had no intention of doing it in the first place. When someone is ready to buy a product online, they just go to amazon or eBay. But what if they find a hair color that they feel would look spectacular on them? Could that not inspire them to book an appointment?
Generate Website Traffic – The amount of website referrals you can get from Pinterest is incredible. When you upload an original image that gets pinned multiple times or maybe even goes viral, the link on the pin will be redirecting traffic back to your website. This can enhance your search engine rankings dramatically. Because very few salons actually take advantage of this; you are in an excellent position to take over the rankings and increase your web presence, and ultimately bring in more customers. The catch though is that the traffic you generate needs to go to a salon website that can convert a potential visitor into a customer."

So if you own a salon, or are a freelance stylist, then it is definitely worth your while to get familiar with using Pinterest!

Suppliers working in the weddings industry are already noticing the difference that Pinterest is making to how they drum up business. When brides approach a florist, they normally come with ideas they have found by searching Pinterest, and it's the same for things like suits for the men. Pinterest has a lot to answer for, in the eyes of many fathers out there!

As someone who is due to get married, you can find inspiration for all aspects of your wedding planning by setting up boards on Pinterest.

Experienced brides suggest creating one master wedding board. It doesn't matter if you already use your Pinterest account for recipes or hairstyles, you can still organise your thoughts regarding your wedding by using different boards. In fact, the more boards you have, the better as it means you are compartmentalising your thoughts.

On your master wedding board, you'll pin anything and everything that you would love for your wedding: wedding inspiration, colour palettes, flowers, dresses, suits, invitation ideas, calligraphy, venues, wedding photos, honeymoon ideas, and much more!

With a year or more to plan a wedding, in most cases, you can continue collecting ideas like this until it's time to make decisions and tighten up your wedding plans. By revisiting the board again and again, you'll start to really get to know what you like and what is most important to you, deleting the images you no longer want in there.

Pinterest will be like your digital wedding planner journal.

Craft making

Are you a craft-aholic?

If so, I bet you have looked up new ideas online to enhance your craft-making skills. Pinterest is a fabulous resource for creative people because it allows you to discover new tricks of the trade and to be inspired by what others are creating across the world. Macrame, wall hangings, jewellery making, crochet... you name it, there are pins for it!

The Pinterest newsroom released this statement, which sums up why Pinterest is such a must-have for curious minds, looking for new projects:

"One of the main reasons people come to Pinterest is to find ideas they’re excited to try for the first time. In fact, 75% of people say Pinterest is the best place to find new interests, and 67% said it’s the place they come to express creativity.

Today we’re introducing how-to Pins—so you can see at a glance what a Pin might be like to try. The next time you find an interesting project or idea on Pinterest, you’ll see a snapshot of the steps right below the Pin image. You can also click or tap on any of the steps to get the full instructions and a list of supplies—without ever leaving Pinterest."

Creating and Modifying an Account on Pinterest

The first step to creating an account on this new network is heading to the website. From there, you can create a personal or professional account.

You’ll then need to provide some information:

  • A valid email address
  • A password
  • Your age

You’ll then be able to create your account. If you choose to connect through Facebook or Gmail, your name will be saved.

You’ll be asked to choose 5 interests and they’ll become the first things you follow. Pinterest will suggest content related to your interests. You can change these later.

Now that your account has been created, you’ll find yourself on Pinterest’s homepage. At the top, there’s a search bar to help you find content. In the corner, there are a few different functions.

You can click on the three dots to do the following:

  • Change your profile photo
  • Change your name
  • Change your username
  • Change your bio
  • Change your location

Finally, if you’re a professional, you can use Pinterest as part of your marketing strategy and increase your online visibility and drive traffic to your website from your Pinterest account.

Finding Content and Pinning It

Now that you’ve got your profile configured and personalised, you can dive into the world of Pinterest.

Using the platform isn’t complicated. From the homepage, you’ll see a whole heap of photos related to your interests. You can search for specific things, too.

Type a word into the search and wait for Pinterest to generate a whole heap of photos and images that other users have contributed to the network. That’s how you find the content you like.

When you find something you like, you can pin it by clicking the pin icon. You’ll have six choices of what to do:

  • Send: Share the photo or image on other social networks like Facebook, Twitter, etc. or via WhatsApp or Gmail, for example.
  • Save: Save the photo or image to a board.
  • Three dots: Report the content as inappropriate or pin it to a site or blog.
  • Commentaries: See what other users have said about it
  • Visit: Go to where the image was pinned from.
  • Visual search: Search by visually similar images.

Once you’ve pinned an image, it’ll appear in your boards, the photo albums where you can see saved images. You need to create a board first, give it a title, and decide whether it’s public or not.

In the Pins tab, you’ll find the images that you’ve saved from Pinterest. These are personal images.

You can also add a Pin It button to your web browser so that you can quickly pin or repin content to your pinboard even when you're not on the website itself.

Posting Your Own Images and Photos

While you can create boards from other users’ photos and images, you can also add your own photos and images.

After creating a board, you just have to click on the “Add a Pin” button which will allow you to add an image from a site or your computer. For your own images, choose the destination from your computer and then confirm. For images online, you’ll need the image’s URL.

You’ll be able to add a description before you pin it. Well done! You’ve just added your first pin to a board! This will be shared amongst users with the same interests as you. Make sure you add keywords to ensure that other people see it.

You’ll end up pinning a lot of photos on Pinterest because there are tonnes of things to see: inspiration for weddings, decorating your house, garden, painting, arts and crafts, etc.

If you’re looking for inspiration, you’re bound to find it on Pinterest.

You can use Pinterest as a business, too. Your main goals will probably be to find customers, digital marketing, or maybe as a Pinterest influencer.

You can create a professional profile. To be successful on the site, you should post high-quality images. You should also think about SEO (search engine optimization) and ensuring your social sharing is in line with your business image.

To convert a personal account into a professional one, you just need to head to your settings. You can start promoting your products on social media.

It’s a great platform for startups doing artisanal products. Since Pinterest is quite different to other types of social networking, so are Pinterest users and the kind of things shared through the Pinterest app or website is quite different to other social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.

Logging Out or Quitting Pinterest

If you see wedding ideas when you close your eyes, it might be time to get off Pinterest.

To do this, you just need to click on the three dots and select log out. That’s all there is to logging out of Pinterest.

There are also plenty of reasons to quit Pinterest. Maybe you’re done with new trends. Maybe you’re missing Snapchat. Maybe you’re sick of social media.

In any case, if you don’t want to use Pinterest any more, head to your account settings and click “Deactivate account”. There are two options:

  • Deactivate your account so that you can reactivate it at any point.
  • Delete your account so that it can never be reactivated.

With all the free time you’ll now have, you might want to create a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram profile.

However, don’t forget that Twitter is a great way to find new ideas, keep up to date with fashion and trends, and find some awesome infographics. You can also use it for your content marketing.

You should be ready to start pinning.

Whether you want to learn about blogging and become a blogger, become a social media marketer on Facebook and Twitter with tonnes of followers, or create Pinterest boards that everyone's talking about as part of your social media strategy, you can search for tutors to help you on Superprof.

There are plenty of tutors on Superprof in the UK and around the world and they offer three main types of tutoring: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials. Each of these types of private tutorials has its pros and cons so you'll need to choose the one that works for you.

Face-to-face tutorials are tailored to the only student in attendance. This means that you can get a tutor who's focused on you and only you. Of course, you can expect to pay for all the extra time your tutor puts into planning your lessons, which is why these tend to be the most costly type. However, they're also the most cost-effective.

Online private tutorials are similar to the face-to-face tutorials with the only difference being that the lessons are delivered via video conferencing software such as Skype. Since the tutor doesn't need to travel to their student, they have fewer expenses and they can make their offering more competitive by charging less for their tutorials.

Group tutorials are a great option if you and a few friends would like to learn more about computers and social media. With multiple students in the class, the cost of the tutoring is shared amongst them. This means that you can expect to pay less per person in a group tutorial than you otherwise would in a private face-to-face tutorial. Of course, this also means that you won't benefit from the tutor tailoring the lessons to just you or spending the entire lesson focusing on you.

A lot of the tutors on Superprof also offer the first hour of tutoring for free. Use this time to work out what you want to learn with your tutor, see if you get along with them, and make sure their tutoring approach is the right one for you. You'll probably be spending a lot of time with them, after all!
