If you’re considering becoming a registered nurse, you’ll have to one day prepare for the NCLEX-RN exam. An adaptive computer test that stands for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. It’s required for nursing graduates to successfully pass the exam in order to become licensed as a Nurse in the US and Canada. The test plan covers about 8 different topics such as management of care, reduction of risk potential, safety and infection control, psychosocial integrity, and even basic care. NCLEX-RN examinations differ in length as they may be based on the candidates' specific ability, so the distribution of the categories may vary from one person to another.
In 2021 the pass ratio for the exam was 83.75%, so it is important for nursing students to prep accordingly and avoid having to take it a second time. So if you’re currently finishing up nursing school or preparing to enroll keep in mind it’s never too early to begin preparing for NCLEX.Â
It’s no secret the NCLEX exam is hard, but neither is it not impossible. If you’ve attended a good nursing program and bought a good NCLEX prep course then you should be in good hands. However, if you want to ensure you’re a part of the 80% of people that pass the exam, then we recommend having a private tutor to help you prep. Having a good study plan in place will help you tackle your weaknesses and get a better grasp of the exam as a whole. It’s important to understand the material, but also the basis of how the NCLEX works and how it’s scored. Being aware of the process and taking the time to comprehend the NCLEX itself will give you an advantage, and help you control your nerves prior to the exam.
Keep in mind that this is a critical thinking exam, not a memorization exam, meaning that your ability to look at problems and analyze them is what is going to help you pass. And it covers all of the materials you’ve learned since your first day at nursing school, so if there’s a concept you don’t understand before make sure you’re a pro prior to taking the exam!
The main purpose of the NCLEX exam is to make sure that nursing graduates can make quality nursing judgments and provide safe patient care. And you simply cannot become an official registered nurse without passing it. There’s a difference between being knowledgeable in school and actually having the ability to analyze a problem in the real world and apply that knowledge in order to best solve it. It’s a crucial exam since these are the kinds of situations you’ll face in your day-to-day nursing shifts, so NCLEX has to make sure you are equipped for the job. Although you are allowed to retake the exam eight times a year, it always looks best to pass it the first or second time.
The reason for this is that a candidate should be able to evaluate the first exam and determine what they need to focus on in order to pass it in retesting. So not being able to determine your weaknesses after one or two tests might show that you are having a hard time solving a problem which is the whole basis of the exam. At times, after failing three times, a nursing student might need to complete a board-approved remediation program before the next retake.
The best way to ensure you succeed at passing the NCLEX is by finding a personal tutor that has experience taking the exam to help guide you and create a study plan. If you’re not sure where to start for finding one then don’t hesitate to contact our team at Superprof, we are more than happy to find you an online or local instructor to get you started. And if you don’t have the budget for a private tutor, then give yourself sufficient time to prepare for the exam. If your nursing program offers an NCLEX review course we suggest you take advantage of it because you’ll likely be ready to take it by graduation. As mentioned before it’s crucial for you to become familiar with the structure of the test, this way you can use the right tools to ace the exam.
This includes learning the types of questions that will be asked and the different topics that will be covered. Lastly, take practice tests in order to expose yourself to more content, which will help you develop effective test-taking strategies. Don’t forget there are endless free resources online to help you prepare so don’t feel discouraged and have patience for yourself during the studying process.
