Methodology
I offer tailor-made French lessons to varied clients according to their personal language learning goals.
I like to put a general emphasis on 1) listening and speaking & 2) grammar.
On one hand, listening and speaking are crucial skills for starting to use a language outside the classroom. It helps with building interest, confidence, and intuition. On the other hand, grammar helps build a structural understanding and allows you to navigate French at ease. My specific tutoring plan is based on individual preferences, interests, and goals.
Background
I am an 3rd year undergraduate at UCSB working towards a Physics BS and a French minor. I have 7 years of experience in French and 1-year of experience in tutoring French. I am fluent in both writing and speaking and have a good understanding of French grammar. I am certified with DELF B2, the official language diploma issued by the French government. I am also familiar with French culture and literature through university studies and personal interests.
Besides being a science girl, I am an international traveler having studied in China, Canada, England, and the USA. I am fluent in 3 languages including French and I would love to share my passion for language with others!
I believe languages are the gateways to different cultures. To me, French is not a subject to learn at school, but a part of my life and my identity. The most rewarding moments for me are when I can communicate at ease with local people when I travel in France; when I can read French literature in the language they were written in.

Ruining is passionate about the French language and French culture. She has taken advanced college levels of French literature classes, and is pursuing a French minor alongside her physics major. Ruining has excellent note-taking, which shows her thoroughness and patience involving the academics.
Ruining saved me in the intro French series and helped me to actually start to converse in French (something the class didn’t prep me as well for). I was mostly training on Duolingo before I started the intro French series at UCSB, but having a peer that understood my difficulties and worked one on one with me was the main reason I destroyed all the tests and can understand spoken French.
