About Patrick
I am a friendly, well-rounded applied and computational mathematics student, double-majoring in economics. I am passionate about math, and even more passionate about using math to make the world a better place and helping other people make sense of math so that rather than fearing it, they can leverage more of its power in their lives! If this is what you want, don't hesitate to reach out:)
I also love music, and play several instruments, such as piano, guitar, and trombone! I enjoy hiking with friends, playing basketball and ultimate frisbee, and spending time with my family.

I teach for understanding, helping learners to understand the principles governing mathematics so that they can see how to think more critically in solving problems on homework and in real life. My philosophy on teaching is that an understanding of abstract concepts allows for incredibly powerful use of deductive reasoning in problem-solving, whereas our current educational approach of learning algorithms to approach certain types of problems limits ones ability to extrapolate to more complex systems. I teach for understanding so that students can solve a broader class of problems by using the intuition that they have developed.
A typical lesson plan includes:
- Talking through problems to gauge proficiency
- Using computational and other tools to gain an intuition for the theory driving the application
- Practice setting up problems--reinforcing understanding of the problem prior to trying to solve it
These lessons are primarily for:
- Students in college-level math classes, such as single- or multivariable-calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis, complex analysis, linear analysis, or optimization courses
- High school students with desire to understand mathematics more
