Building confidence in yourself is key. I have real world professional experience working under pressure, as well as using a diverse set of tools that can be applied to fiction, non-fiction and professional editorials. I have always had a unique voice, but I've found that a lot of new writers struggle with finding theirs and that is my #1 goal as your instructor is to help you find yourself. No matter your level I want to push you to the point where you can always sound like you whether you're writing a term paper on black hole-theory, an esoteric analysis of Jane Austin's feminism, or a pulp-fiction crime thriller.
I won my first writing competition and a directing competition in HS and have been writing ever since. I have a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I started as a CW major but switched to Honors English b/c I found work as a writer/editor while still in college and found real-world experience more useful than workshops. I was a professional reviewer for a couple years, reviewing plays, musicals and restaurants. I've been published in writing journals and worked as the editor/copywriter for an art magazine. I was editor for an Indian Guru for a couple years so I have a real-world understanding of the challenges of ESL writers. I backed away from English and switched careers to become a financial consultant for a couple years. I made enough as a consultant to be able to afford to take a couple years off from work to work on my novels, and I've finished one. I spent a lot of money on vacations and trips to Vegas however and now find myself in need of money again. The best advice I can give to anyone interested in a career in writing is to JUST DO IT. Also don't be afraid to reach out to your favorite authors, I have become friends with many amazing authors whose work I was fans of for years before messaging them on Facebook and asking for an interview for the website I was working for at the time. With the exception of big names like J.K. Rowling or Stephen King most writers do not get hundreds of messages and fan mail, they are generally humble people who would love to hear how big of a fan you are and how their work has affected your life.
