About Anush
Anush is an Armenian American, award-winning soprano, trained pianist, accomplished actor, endurance athlete, and passionate teacher. She began acting in middle school and won competitions for her Shakespeare skills, playing Hamlet in sixth grade at the DTASC festival in California. Her love for music grew over 10 years of piano lessons, complemented by solfège and choral lessons with her two sisters during music school throughout her childhood. When choosing a college major, Anush was accepted into top universities like UC Berkeley and UCLA as an undeclared sciences major, based on her grades and test scores. Ultimately, she followed her passion for music, earning a full scholarship to UCLA as a Vocal Opera Major. There, she excelled so quickly that she was advised to consider graduating early or pursuing a double major in music education. With her love of learning, she chose the latter. Those years of study led Anush to win several competitions in the highly competitive opera field. She was named the first-prize winner of the Mondavi music competition, which earned her invitations to perform several solo recitals that she curated herself. At age 21, she won fourth prize at the Nedra Zachary competition, where she met Tito Capobianco, who had worked as stage director for Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Beverly Sills at the New York City Opera. Mr. Capobianco became her mentor and immediately accepted her into the Academy of Vocal Arts. At 21, she joined one of the world’s top operatic training programs, whose graduates perform on major stages worldwide. She was also accepted and invited back to the Opera Theater of Saint Louis, where she was awarded the Richard Gaddes Award for Most Promising Young Artists. There, she was scouted and invited to receive her master’s at Yale University. Having earned her double major in music and education from UCLA and an artist diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts, Anush accepted an invitation to Yale University, which included a stipend and free education. There, Anush met her husband, Matthew Cossack, who was the greatest gift that music led her to. They both reside in Brooklyn, New York, and are passionate about educating the next generation of musicians and sharing the incredible knowledge they possess.

One of my greatest strengths as a teacher is that I believe great singing can be taught. Great singing is not only defined by having impeccable technique, but it is also about acquiring the technique that allows you to express whatever is inside of you. Within all of us is so much untapped potential, artistry, and talent, and it is waiting to be drawn out. No matter your age, ability, background, or belief, I believe we all have something exceptional and beautiful to offer this world. One of my greatest joys is finding that in all my students and helping them see that. Once they do, the rest is easy.

I studied with Anush for two years while at Yale. Anush is my favorite kind of teacher: technical and precise while always being fun and engaging. Her teaching method always prioritized healthy, free singing. My technical capabilities grew exponentially while studying with her – I could honestly feel the difference from week to week in rehearsals as things that were previously difficult for me to sing became easy and natural thanks to my lessons with her.
Anush is also that special teacher that responds directly to *your* specific needs and background. In my case, knowing that I was a string player, Anush was able to relate a lot of concepts back to what I knew already from my musical background. She also took my particular goals into account – I told her I wanted to focus intensively on learning better technique, and she really delivered on that. Anush helped me successfully prepare for auditions for grad school, professional choirs, and choral solos. In addition to her help with technique and specific repertoire, she had invaluable guidance about how to approach auditions and how to find a healthier mindset as a musician.
People are always shocked when I tell them that I took my first voice lesson only 5 years ago: thanks to Anush’s excellent instruction, people in professional and academic settings consistently think that I have been taking voice lessons my whole life. Anush has given me an excellent foundation for the rest of my career, and for a lifelong love of singing.View more recommendations
