About Jeremy
I am broadly trained in the Humanities. I am a professional philosopher (Ph.D.) and have been teaching college courses for 17 years, the past 7 of which have been stationed in China. I had to learn Chinese (Mandarin) the hard way--thrown into an entirely different culture and language, with no preparation, as part of a teaching job. Unlike most foreigners who live and work in China, I took up the challenge to actually learn the language, and regain my autonomy while living there--rather than relying on translation software or friends who were native speakers. I know the challenges Westerners face in starting to learn this language, and my experience and teaching skills can give you the best start.

Our lessons will be a team effort. I will create bespoke learning materials and presentations designed for your particular learning goals/course requirements, as well as your own learning needs and preferences. Your contribution will be to study the provided materials in advance, and actively engage in discussion and analysis during the tutoring session. We will work through the materials together, with engaging discussion and activities, to make sure you fully understand and even master the content you wish to learn.
