About Augustine

Teaching saxophone is, to me, a journey of continuous growth, where mastering technique and finding one’s musical voice are equally important. I engage closely with each student’s level—whether they’re taking their first breath in a lesson or polishing advanced jazz solos—creating personalized paths aligned with their musical passions and aspirations. We begin by building a strong technical foundation: focusing on breath support that allows sustained phrasing, precise embouchure development for tone clarity, agile finger technique, and consistent timbre across registers. Essential skills like intonation and articulation receive dedicated attention so that students feel authoritative in ensemble settings and confident when performing solos. Simultaneously, I introduce improvisation early through interactive call-and-response exercises and melodic improvisation based on scales and motifs, fostering a sense of musical spontaneity and narrative. Music theory is woven into playing, rather than taught in isolation, helping students connect technical concepts to real-world music—whether they’re interpreting jazz standards, arranging pop tunes, exploring blues phrasing, or delving into classical repertoire. Choosing repertoire that aligns with each student’s tastes ensures lessons are engaging and meaningful. Collaborative goal setting supports this process, with milestones tailored to performance outings, auditions, technical progress, or creative composition projects. One of my most memorable teaching moments was guiding a reserved student who, after months of trust-building and creative encouragement, emerged as a confident soloist in a local ensemble—an experience that reaffirmed the power of supportive mentorship. Ultimately, my aspiration is to develop saxophonists who are technically skilled, expressively courageous, and equipped to share their musical stories with authenticity and joy.

My saxophone teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is a universal language that transcends boundaries and connects us all. I aim to create a learning environment where students feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and grow.

From the outset, I emphasize the importance of sound production, focusing on breath support, embouchure, and tone quality. These foundational elements are crucial for developing a rich, resonant sound and for building the technical skills necessary to tackle more complex pieces. I also introduce students to the fundamentals of music theory, helping them understand the structure and language of music. This knowledge empowers them to interpret and perform music with greater insight and expression.

Recognizing that each student has unique learning needs and goals, I tailor my lessons to suit their individual preferences and aspirations. Whether a student is interested in classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, or contemporary pop music, I strive to provide repertoire that aligns with their interests while challenging them to grow. I believe in the power of performance to build confidence and musicality. I encourage students to participate in recitals and ensembles, providing opportunities to showcase their progress and to learn from others. Technology is an integral part of my teaching approach.

I incorporate digital tools such as recording software, metronomes, and tuners to facilitate practice and to provide students with immediate feedback. These tools help students develop a more critical ear and a deeper understanding of their playing. Ultimately, my goal is to instill in students a lifelong love for music, a strong sense of discipline, and the confidence to express themselves through their instrument.
