As it can be difficult to get to a gym due to money, time, distance, or the global pandemic, it’s never been more important to exercise where and when you can. Whether you want to lose weight or build muscle, you have to exercise.
To help you with this, Nintendo had an excellent idea of creating video games that will get you moving. Fitness Boxing is one such game and while gaming is often considered almost the opposite of a workout, if you dance, move around, or even throw punches, you can burn calories and improve your fitness.
In this article, we’ll be looking at the advantages of playing Fitness Boxing and Fitness Boxing 2 on the Nintendo Switch to help you with working out, burning calories, and toning muscle from the comfort of your own home.
What Is Fitness Boxing?
As the name suggests, Fitness Boxing (and Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm and Exercise) are games where you use the techniques of boxing to help you with your fitness by burning calories and toning muscle.
While these two games aren’t as popular as Ring Fit Adventure, they’re still a good idea for those looking to exercise outside of a gym. However, Fitness Boxing 2 had already sold an impressive 500,000 copies by January 2021.

This is what Fitness Boxing is all about throwing punches in time to music with the help of your virtual instructor, a digital fitness coach who’ll encourage you to exercise while having fun. The goal is to improve with each session.
Of the two games, there’s a wealth of great tunes for you to exercise to. These include:
- Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
- WALK THE MOON - Shut Up and Dance
- Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
- The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
- Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger
- LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
- Ariana Grande - Break Free
- Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun
- Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang
- Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
- Martin Garrix - Animals
- Bon Jovi - It’s My Life
Needless to say, you shouldn’t get bored during your workouts, at least not with the coaches there to motivate you. It’s a great way to unwind as you exercise, burn calories, and tone muscle.
To play the game, you’ll need either Fitness Boxing or Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm and Exercise as well as a Nintendo Switch and working Joy-Cons. You’ll also need to clear some space by your television so that you can freely move around without hitting anything.

What You Can Do with Fitness Boxing
For those looking to build muscle, boxing is a great sport to do it. This is why Nintendo thought of taking inspiration from boxing for the games.
With Fitness Boxing, there are a few things you can do:
- Work on your rhythm
- Practise sequences
- Improve your timing
- Train a particular part of your body
- Free training
- Exercise with a partner
- Track your progress
- Go over the fundamentals of boxing
- Get back in shape
- Improve your endurance, muscle mass, or tone
In Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm and Exercise, there are different game modes including lessons, free training, daily sessions, and challenges. The modes can show you what you need to do and are more than enough to get you moving.
When you first start, you’ll have a tutorial to show you what to do and you’ll need to put in your age, size, and weight to more accurately track your progression. At the end of your session, you’ll be given a fitness age that you’ll be looking to lower as you progress.
You can choose the songs, coaches, or objectives for each session. You can also set the level and intensity and move up to the “No Mercy” intensity if you’re feeling up to it.
The Advantages of Fitness Boxing
Around the world, there are different variants of boxing. Generally, boxing is practised in a gym where participants will train to improve their endurance and strength.
Boxing training sessions can be used to work various parts of the body:
- The cardiovascular system
- Joints in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists
- Lower body (thighs, calves, feet)
- Upper body (chest, arms, waist, back)
In other words, boxing works almost your entire body and is a great way to get rid of love handles, flatten your stomach, and lose weight while toning your muscles.
Boxing can help you improve your flexibility, speed, and movement while also building self-confidence. Of course, there are health risks involved as there are with any sporting activity so take the proper precautions.
By using jabs, hooks, uppercuts, dodges, and blocks, you’ll work on the various parts of your body and it’s also a great way to alleviate stress. Add in some music and you’ve got Fitness Boxing.
As the game is on the Switch, you’ve also got the added benefit of improving your coordination and rhythm. The timing is important as that’s how you progress in the game, but if you need some extra motivation, you can play with a partner and challenge one another.
Improve Your Training with Fitness Boxing
To get the most out of Fitness Boxing sessions, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.
Firstly, diet goes hand-in-hand with exercise so make sure that you’re eating healthily or you’ll never really see the benefits of your exercise. Eat a balanced diet and ensure that you enjoy everything in moderation.

Hippocrates is right. Diet is often responsible for weight gain but it also provides us with the necessary energy to exercise and to recover afterwards. You’ll need fruits and vegetables as well as proteins and sugars.
You’ll also get more out of your Fitness Boxing if you ensure you have the space to do it. You’ll have to make large movements and you don’t want to hit anyone or anything else when you’re exercising.
You may also want to complement your Fitness Boxing with other types of exercise. Running, cycling, swimming, yoga, or dancing are all good options.
The game will allow you to track your progress, how many calories you burn, your fitness age, your weight, and your BMI over time. Don’t hesitate to check in on this from time to time to see how you’re doing.

Of course, if you want even more help, consider hiring a private fitness tutor on Superprof!
Generally, tutorials are offered face-to-face or online to individuals or groups. Each type of training and tuition has its pros and cons so think carefully about which one would be right for you, your level, your fitness goals, and your budget.
Face-to-face fitness instructors can tailor each session to you and your level to ensure that you get the most out of every activity you do. Usually, this type of coaching is more costly than the others as you're paying for the tutor's time in and out of the sessions as well as the time and money they have to spend to get to you. Of course, with every minute focusing on you, this type of training is also the most cost-effective.
Group training sessions are great for those on a budget as you can spread out the cost of the instructor's time since every member of the class will be paying for the session. While this means that you won't be able to enjoy sessions that are tailored just to you, there will be other participants there and it can be motivating to exercise with others, especially if they're of a similar fitness level.
Thanks to the internet, online personal training sessions are also available. Much like with video games, your trainer will be behind a screen. Since they don't have to travel to their customers, they usually charge less as they don't have to worry about travel costs and can also schedule more sessions each week due to the time saved by not travelling.
Remember that a lot of the tutors and personal trainers on Superprof offer the first lesson or session for free. You can use these free sessions to try out several different fitness instructors or tutors before deciding on which one is right for you. With personal training, it's really important that you like your instructor and get on well with them as you'll be much more willing to do the strenuous exercises they want you to do.
