Everyone seems to have a gym membership at some point, and it seems like all your friends are at the gym to do a certain class or hit the weights. There’s the old joke you only have a gym membership to say you have a gym membership. However, you should realize, there are lots of benefits of going to the gym. Gyms are also becoming more and more popular in the States and each one tries to sell you a different advantage that it may have over other gyms. This may make it all tricky to choose a gym, however, going to a gym is a really smart choice for both your mental and physical well-being.

Unfortunately, the United States does not have the best reputation around the world as being a healthy country. In the United States obesity is a huge problem, and we are one of the few developed countries that have that problem. While there are many influencers and celebrities in great shape, and this makes the USA look like the land of flat abs and perfect thighs. Unfortunately, the truth is, the percentage of obese people is extremely high. Apart from the help to your physique, going to the gym has its fair share of help to your mental health as well.

However, as with any type of business, you’ll have to find the best one for you based on what they offer and the deals that they can give you. There are plenty of reasons why you should go to the gym. Picking the specific gym for you when you have loads of options is the only tough question you’ll be needing to ask yourself.

How much is the gym going to cost you?

Gyms can be expensive however there are low cost options

Like any type of business or corporation in the country, you usually will have different options to choose from. While there are some gyms that will offer you the works from top-of-the-line gym equipment to spas, to wifi, and more, there are some gyms that prefer to go low cost. Perhaps you would prefer to go to one of these types of gyms even if they offer fewer luxuries than the more expensive ones. You will also need to take into account that there are different types of memberships in a lot of gyms that offer you different access to clubs, classes, and uses of equipment. So what is the average cost of a gym in the USA?

On average people spend around $38 a month on their gym, which makes the yearly average between 450 and 500 dollars for most people in the U.S. If you think that’s too much you have some alternatives. So what are some famous low-cost/affordable gyms?

  • Planet Fitness
  • Local YMCA
  • 24-hour fitness

These gyms are great for people who need to save a bit of money. You can get ripped for cheap if you go to one of these gyms, while maybe you won’t have the state-of-the-art equipment or some added luxuries that some of the higher-priced gyms or memberships have, you can still get your workout in and save a few bucks.

The most famous gyms in the USA

There are gyms that have a great reputation in the USA, and obviously very well known. However, what makes a gym great? Well, that depends on one thing, the reason YOU want to go to the gym! There are gyms that are better for aerobics classes or zumba, or better designed for you to become huge, also those with a better price as mentioned earlier, and gyms you can go to at two in the morning.

Some gyms that have a stellar reputation in one category or another are:

  • 24 Hour Fitness
  • Planet Fitness
  • Anytime Fitness
  • Crunch Fitness
  • LA Fitness
  • Gold’s Gym

Within this list, there are gyms that offer you a 24 hour period to go, as well as some that will offer you better gym equipment and amenities such as protein shakes to get you looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the ’80s. What you have to do is research and read about what gyms offer and you can go from there.

How to use the gym equipment

So if you’re a gym novice and not a gym rat just yet you’ll want to get a quick look at the gym equipment and weights that you’ll be using once you’re at the gym. Now there are very new types of gym equipment that we can have a look at, however, let’s keep it with a few of the basic types of weights:

Dumbbells

You can’t really go wrong with dumbbells. There are lots of upper body exercises you can do with these bad boys. Above all, they’re great equipment to give you some major biceps and triceps.

Barbell Bench Press

It’s hard to find something that looks cooler than a guy lifting over 300 pounds at the bench press. Now definitely do not try this if you’re a newbie. Using the bench press is a great way to work out your chest muscles and little by little you’ll be lifting like an NFL linebacker.

Treadmill

Nothing more basic than a treadmill. It’s basic, you step on, start it, and start running. Nowadays we treadmills have screens put in them so you can distract yourself by putting on a display of a run in nature or some funny videos to watch while burning all those calories.

Different machines

There are many different machines you can also use to help you start out. Machines make it easier to stabilize your body as you’re lifting weights and you don’t need to constantly go on and change weights every time you want to add weight to your workout.

Who can help you achieve your goals?

There are many gyms that offer personal trainers, and for this, they charge more money and you can set up a schedule and workout plan with them to make sure you achieve your goals. Personal trainers not only tell you what to do in the gym but they are also there to motivate you to work harder and train more efficiently. They can also help you to choose a diet based on what your goals are, for example, if you wanted to gain more muscle. A personal trainer can help you choose a diet that is higher in protein. So while in a gym you can find a personal trainer using the internet is another way.

Luckily Superprof exists for you to find any type of tutor and in this case a personal trainer! Using Superprof you can find a personal trainer that can help you by going to the gym with you, or even come to your house and help you train from home if you need to stay home from the gym for some reason. There even exists the option for a skype call, as we are in a time of the pandemic, it's normal to not necessarily want a face-to-face meeting. You can choose a trainer on Superprof that can help you with a specific goal based on the reviews that they’ve received

Why should you go to the gym??

The question of why you should go to the gym is another great question and surely you can find an answer for yourself. If you are just looking for something cool to do during the morning or afternoon (and in some cases middle of the night) the gym can be perfect for you. As mentioned before many gyms have spas, and even have areas to practice sports and swimming pools. Some gyms can seem like hotels rather than a place to workout

Two important reasons to go to the gym however, are for your physical and mental health. For obvious reasons gyms can improve your physical health, the purpose of the gym is to work out and become more fit. However, a gym can also give you a sense of accomplishment.

Going to the gym can greatly affect your mental health in a positive way. People with depression have found mental health and stability at the gym. There are people who have had eating disabilities that having a regular workout has made them have the need to eat more. Also going to classes makes it possible to meet new people and achieve goals together and push each other, as well as in the weight room.

The benefits of going to the gym are definitely numerous. Many people seem to have a membership for a reason because they are really great places to go! What is needed is some consistency and drive, and even a little help if need be and you can achieve whatever it is that you wish to achieve in the gym of your choice.
