The ISSA certification cost starts at $868 when you pay in full for the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) course. You can also spread it over 12 monthly payments of $89, which comes to $1,068. Bundles that add specialization courses run from $1,199 to $2,100.
Every price in this guide comes from the International Sports Sciences Association’s own website. We cover each bundle, the exam options, renewal, and specialization courses. We also compare ISSA with NASM and ACE, so you can see where your money goes furthest.

How Much Does Each ISSA Bundle Cost?
ISSA sells its CPT course on its own or inside three larger bundles. Each bundle adds one or more specialization courses and a free CPR/AED course. Paying upfront is the cheapest route, since the monthly plans cost more in total.
Price guide
ISSA personal trainer bundles and prices
| Bundle | Paid in full | 12 monthly payments | What it includes |

| Certified Personal Trainer | $868 | $89/mo | CPT course and your choice of exam |

| Elite Trainer | $1,300 | $125/mo | CPT course, 1 specialization, Nutrition Coach, Strength & Conditioning, Exercise Effect, CPR/AED course |
| Master Trainer | $2,100 | $175/mo | CPT course, 5 more courses including Nutrition Coach, CPR/AED course |
Prices published by ISSA, checked Sept 28, 2026. The CPT and Elite Trainer prices include a $200 discount for paying in full. A $49-down plan is also available, with slightly higher monthly payments. The NCCA-accredited exam adds a $79 proctoring fee. Full references in the Sources section.
The standalone CPT course doesn’t include CPR/AED training. You still need a current CPR/AED card before ISSA issues your certificate. If you already hold one, the $868 course is the leanest way to get certified.
What other ISSA fees should you budget for?
The course price covers most of what you need, but a few extra costs can come up. Plan for these before you enroll.
- Accredited exam proctoring: $79, charged by Prometric for the NCCA-accredited exam, online or at a test center
- Exam retakes: your first retake of the ISSA exam is free, and later attempts carry an administrative fee
- CPR/AED: free in most bundles, or available separately through ISSA
- Renewal: $99 every 2 years, waived if you earn all 20 continuing education units (CEUs) through ISSA
- Extra specializations: $629 to $950 each when bought outside a bundle
What is the ISSA, and what does the CPT course cover?
The International Sports Sciences Association was founded in 1988. ISSA describes itself as the first organization to educate and certify personal trainers. Its co-founder, chiropractor Dr. Sal Arria, worked with the US track and field team at the 1984 Olympics.
When it was time for athletes to return to the field, if we hadn’t made them stronger, more flexible, faster, and more conditioned than they were before they got injured, we would be doing them an injustice.
Dr. Sal Arria, president and co-founder of the International Sports Sciences Association
Today the CPT course is fully online and self-paced. It teaches client assessment, program design, coaching, and business basics. You get a digital textbook, an exercise video library, practice quizzes, and weekly live Zoom sessions. ISSA says you can finish in as little as 3 months, and the course gives you 6 months to complete it.
What do you need to earn the CPT?
- Be at least 18 years old to sit the NCCA-accredited exam
- Score at least 70% on the ISSA exam, or pass the accredited NCCPT exam
- Upload a current CPR/AED card
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID if you take the proctored exam
Which ISSA exam should you take?
Your course includes a choice between two exams. Both lead to a personal trainer credential, but they differ in format and recognition.
- ISSA’s own exam: open-book, untimed, and not proctored. It can have up to 200 questions, and you need 70% to pass.
- NCCPT exam: accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and run by ISSA’s subsidiary, the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers. It has 140 multiple-choice questions, 125 of them scored. You get two hours, with no notes, online or at a Prometric center.
ISSA reports a 95% exam pass rate. The accredited exam carries the extra $79 proctoring fee. It is also the exam ISSA’s job guarantee requires, which makes it worth the cost for most career starters.
How much do ISSA specialization courses cost?
ISSA courses beyond the CPT help you serve specific clients and stand out to employers. Bought on their own, most specializations cost $639, or 12 payments of $53. The Nutrition Coach course costs $629, and the Health Coach course costs $950.
Bundles are the better deal if you plan to specialize. The CPT course plus one $639 specialization comes to $1,507 bought separately. The Fitness Coach bundle includes both, plus CPR/AED, for $1,199.
Specializations offered in ISSA bundles include:
- Nutrition Coach
- Strength & Conditioning Coach
- Corrective Exercise Specialist
- Bodybuilding Specialist
- Exercise Recovery Specialist
- Transformation Specialist
- Tactical Conditioning Specialist
- Group Exercise Instructor
- Indoor Cycling Instructor
- Running Coach
How does the ISSA job guarantee work?
ISSA offers a money-back job guarantee on its CPT course. If you don’t land a job within 6 months of completing the course, ISSA refunds what you paid, less any discounts. ISSA lists more than 23,000 hiring partners.
The guarantee only applies if you pass the NCCA-accredited exam. You must be a legal US resident and apply and interview with at least 3 gyms within the 6 months. Keep a record of your applications and interviews in case you need to claim.
Which is cheaper, NASM or ISSA?
For a full study course, ISSA’s $868 paid-in-full price is competitive. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) prices its study packages separately and changes them often. NASM also sells its exam alone for $599, with no study materials.
Both certifications cost the same to renew: $99 every 2 years. NASM is known for its OPT training model and reports an 85% pass rate for 2025. Choose NASM if its OPT model and specializations suit your goals. Choose ISSA if you want an open-book option, a job guarantee, and business training built in.
How does ISSA compare with ACE?
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is another NCCA-accredited option. Its Personal Trainer exam costs $499 on its own, or $99 when added to a study program. ACE study programs list at $989 to $1,749, and ACE often discounts them.
ACE renewal costs $129 every 2 years, compared with ISSA’s $99. ACE suits you if you only need the exam and want to study on your own. ISSA gives you more for the money when you want specializations and career support in one package.
