If you really love manga and anime and you are from the United States, there is no lie that it would be quite difficult to achieve a career in creating your very own manga or anime. Even in Japan, it's not exactly a business that is 100% guaranteed, and of course, Japan is the country that created manga and anime and has a huge international industry. While it can be difficult it is certainly not impossible. There are published American manga writers so there is a possibility that your work can it big and possibly get published.

As you develop or have developed your artistic skills, you will have more options available to you. Even if you do not have a manga that has been published or if you possibly don't want to make a manga to be published you won't be lacking options for a career in animation.

In the United States, there are many animation studios that are open to ideas. While cartoons from the United States have a much different style to Japanese manga and anime there have been cartoons over the years that have used that Japanese style and have drawn influence from Japanese manga and anime. Finding yourself as a professional animator is a great fit and one of a few ideas for working professionally in manga and anime. Who knows you could even find yourself all the way around the world working for a big anime hit in Japan.

Where to Learn how to Draw

One of the most important parts of making your own manga or being able to find work in the illustration is the ability to draw. Drawing is super important obviously as mangas and animes are illustrations and animations, learning how to draw and draw the anime style will be super important. There are also many other secrets in the anime and manga world that you will need to know if you want to become successful in the industry.

Learning to draw expressions and how to convey feelings, as well as battle scenes and background settings will also be extremely important as an illustrator. So where exactly can you learn all of these secrets?

  • Art school in Japan
  • Art schools in the United States
  • Colleges with art programs
  • Anime and Manga clubs
  • Art club at high school

Every little bit of practice and advice can be super helpful in your training to become a professional manga and anime illustrator. There are many prestigious schools in the United States and around the world to study art, and at some point, during your learning experience, you can learn how to draw Japanese style.

At the very least you would be able to get amazing help and be able to learn from top teachers and professionals. Being able to take a leap and go to Japan would also be amazing as you could learn from illustrators who most likely have a lot of experience and manga and anime. Also, who wouldn't love to live in Japan for a while?

Storytelling is another major part of learning how to make a manga or anime as well as the art style and drawing influence from animes especially classic ones is a trick that many manga artists over the years have done. You can be passionate about animes and mangas but that doesn't mean you've read or watched every single one. Some great content to base a story or style on are these mangas and animes:

  • Dragonball
  • One Piece
  • Evangelion Neon Genesis
  • Attack on Titan
  • Death Note
  • Sailor Moon
  • Naruto
  • Spirited Away

Many artists have taken note of these animes and mangas and have made their own successful series. Who knows, maybe you can be the next one.

Finding Professional Drawing Help

If your artwork needs some help then going to a tutor can be a fantastic idea. Superprof offers many tutors that have great ratings for you to choose from. There are many tutors that have experience helping aspiring artists learn to draw, including learn to draw mangas and animes.

While you will have your own style you can work with a drawing teacher to help you learn the basics and to keep growing as an artist.

Working in the Anime and Manga World

You have a passion for Japanese anime and manga and this is amazing and you want to dedicate your time to make your art better and even show it to the world. You must also be asking yourself how you can profit from your love of anime and manga as well as your talent for drawing Japanese-style cartoons. There are a few different professions where you can directly or indirectly work on anime and contribute to making your own anime or working as part of a team in a studio.

Manga Artist or "Mangaka":

A manga artist and illustrator, or in Japanese known as a mangaka, is a person who writes and illustrates his own manga. There are very popular manga artists in Japan and even some in the United States! Obviously, manga artists are much more popular and well known in Japan, as manga culture is huge there and just about everyone reads manga or watches anime.

Luckily for you, while it may be much more difficult to get your manga published if you are able to get it published and find some success you could make a huge amount of money in the United States. Manga artist's salaries can go well above 300 thousand dollars a year! That is a lot of money for being successful in something you are passionate about.

However, the bad part is this is the top of the chain when it comes to manga artist salaries in the United States it will be incredibly difficult to reach this figure although the median salary isn't bad at just over 60 thousand dollars a year, and you can definitely earn a living as a manga artist.

Working in a Studio

The United States produces a lot of entertainment, whether it is music, sports, films, cartoons, and comics are no exception. Maybe you really love anime and manga but you aren't really interested in creating your own story from scratch or want to work week in and week out on new content for your story. That is totally understandable, while being a mangaka is a cool job it can be really stressful.

There are many animation studios throughout the country whether they be small or a large and famous studio that has their own channel. Working as an illustrator or animator for a studio can be a great job as you can work on a cartoon and introduce a Japanese style to it.

Here are some animation studios you could possibly work for and help to create animation with.

  • Hornet
  • FlickerLab
  • Bonfire
  • Z Animation
  • Grasshorse Studios

Animators in the United States can make over 60,000 dollars a year and can go up to over one hundred thousand. Working as an animator can be a creative and fulfilling job.

Voice Dubbing and Subtitles

If you want to be involved in anime but drawing isn't your thing there is a great way to earn a living. You can use your voice. The majority of animes come to Japan but there is a large audience of anime and manga fans in the United States. Sometimes an audience decides to watch an anime in Japanese with English subtitles as they do not speak Japanese or they listen to a dubbed version in English.

You can do one of these jobs. Obviously, as someone who makes subtitles, you would need to be able to speak Japanese fluently and have computer skills and knowledge. This job doesn't pay nearly as much as being a voice actor. As a voice actor, it would be your job to read and voice act what is written and give a voice in English to the anime character. This includes all the yelling and screaming that comes along with it. Voice actors makeover 70 thousand a year on average.
