Many people will tell you accountant, lawyer, or doctor if you are talking about what possible future profession you may want to do when you are older or even right now. While those professions pay really really well they may or may not be for everyone. There are quite a few of us who are artistic and would much rather draw and create. If you are passionate about this why not? You should always try and go out and achieve your dreams first, right?

If you are an American and love Japanese culture and especially love Japanese mangas and anime and are thinking about becoming involved in that world there of course is always a way to do so. Thinking about creating your own anime or manga means you definitely are passionate about the topic and we should always follow our passions. There are a lot of doubts as to why you should become a manga or anime artist.

I am sure you are wondering if you can earn a good salary, or if it will be difficult for your manga or anime to become really famous. Many successful manga and anime artists have come face to face with these problems and questions. It isn't an easy task to have your manga idea and artwork published and continually be successful week after week. However that being said, even as an American, it is possible to see your own manga or anime become successful and/or to achieve a long-lasting career in animation.

Difficulties You May Encounter as a Manga or Anime Artist

The road to becoming a famous mangaka is not necessarily an easy one. You may find some difficulties along the way, just as with any road to stardom. Well, stardom may be a bit of an exaggeration, not every mangaka is a superstar in Japan after all. So what struggles may you face trying to establish yourself as a manga or anime artist?

  • Finding a publisher
  • Drawing skills are not good enough yet
  • Having enough money
  • The Market

Finding a Publisher

Trying to sell a manga or anime idea to a publisher can be really difficult, especially as we are in the United States and not Japan. Note that in Japan it can be extremely easy for everyone but of course Japan has a vast market for anime and manga. While anime and manga are also big in the United States it's not really a huge industry here and we show or publish what comes from Japan here in 99% of the cases.

Needing to Develop Drawing Skills Still

If manga and anime is your passion of course drawing is a really important skill for you to develop. Even in your free time if you're a fan the typical thing is to be drawing your favorite anime characters in the back of your notebook while you're bored or for fun.

While drawing in your notebook is all well and good, you have to develop your talent as an illustrator. Not only is the quality of your character's appearance important but you also have to think about backgrounds and movements and many other things that go into drawing a manga.

You may want to just jump headfirst into the manga universe and profession but developing your talent is extremely important.

Having Enough Money for Drawing

Drawing only requires a pencil, paper, and eraser. Illustrating and drawing professionally is a whole other matter. If you want to create an issue for a manga that you would like to be published and taken seriously, you would benefit from being able to draw on high-quality pieces of paper, typically used for comics, as well as using other equipment that professional illustrators use to create mangas and comics.

Being able to use these tools will greatly increase the quality of your work. As someone trying to make your own manga, you should definitely look into buying some of this stuff. However top of the line art material can be really expensive, therefore. If you are trying to start out on a budget that can make starting out more difficult and you can have less of a chance of getting your manga published.

The Anime Market in the United States

Anime is popular in the United States however nowhere near the levels that it is popular in Japan. It will be much more difficult for you to become a famous mangaka in the United States. However, there are mangakas and animators in the United States that have had success such as Mark Crilley and animator Michael Dante Dimateo.

You probably won't get the fame as Japanese mangakas do in Japan, and perhaps this could lead you to go try out working in Japan, but in the United States, it's not totally impossible either.

Positives: If Manga and Anime Are Your Passions, Go for it

Now to get to the reasons you definitely SHOULD try and become a manga artist or an animator. Most likely it is your passion. Normally people in the United States who would like to become a mangaka or animator do so and are really interested in anime or mangas.

You've probably grown up with or are growing up with animes and mangas and feel influenced by what you've seen. As a beginner it can be difficult, however, there are plenty of professional opportunities available to animators and illustrators.

Who knows at some point you may be the one to influence a future animator as well.

Animators in the United States have been around for a long time. The United States has had a history of comic book creators and cartoon drawers ever since the days of Walt Disney and beyond.
