The History of the NFL

The National Football Leagues goes back to Canton, Ohio during a meeting at a car dealership in 1920, where a group of team owners founded the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Two years later, the league rebranded as the National Football League, and it has carried that name ever since. Those early days looked nothing like the billion-dollar product franchise today.

How many teams are in the NFL?
32

When the NFL entered the modern era, it expanded into 32 teams.

The league changed drastically in the postwar era, as television brought professional football in American living rooms across the country. That growth set the stage for one of the most consequential moments in league history: the rise of a rival league, the American Football League (AFL), in 1960. To avoid having two competing teams, the leagues merged in 1966, with the deal fully completed in 1970. One of the merger's lasting legacies was the creation of the AFC and NFC conferences, structured roughly to mirror the old AFL and NFL, and the introduction of a championship that will become known as the Super Bowl.
