Would you like to embark on this adventure?
You will quickly run into administrative and financial issues. But which rates will you need to apply to your lessons?
What Criteria Should You Be Thinking About When Setting Your Price
Setting a rate for Spanish classes is not easy. To do so, refer to 4 main criteria.
What's your level of Spanish?
If you have a high level and are able to teach beginners or high school students, do not be too greedy.
You must offer courses with a good price/quality ratio.
Students may be more attracted to native Spanish tutors or those with a diploma.
Is the language of Cervantes your mother tongue? Are you bilingual, or, better yet, do you have dual nationality?
If you put these features forward, a student may be more attracted by a Spanish-speaking profile.
Your students will feel like they are learning Spanish in Spain without needing to travel!
If you are Latino, mention your knowledge of Latin America and explain how you can enrich a student's personal culture.
Intermediate levels may offer courses between 15 and 20 USD/hour while advanced levels, native speakers, and Spanish graduates can ask for a higher rate ranging from 20 to 30 USD per hour.

On the Superprof platform, Daniel, a graduate history professor, offers courses at 15 USD an hour, while Isabel, an associate professor, asks for 30 USD an hour.
Your experience also factors in quite a bit when it comes to tutoring Spanish. If you are new to the subject, you cannot ask for too much money.
Students are often reassured by their tutor having a lot of experience.
So if experience is not your strong suit, find something else to make you shine in the eye of the student.
If you are early on in your teaching years, offer a low rate of up to 18 USD per hour.
However, if you have years of experience behind you, you can easily drive up the price to 25 USD per hour. This seems OK in view of statistics.
Surely you know already how to organise your Spanish lessons?
Does your student need to strengthen his language skills for the baccalaureate? For his university studies? To take an exam? To travel and communicate with the natives?
If your student simply wants to become familiar with the Spanish language before leaving for a short language stay in Barcelona for a total immersion your work upstream will be less than if you have to prepare a student for an important exam.
Indeed, a beginner to whom you will have to teach the basics of Spanish will require much less effort on your part than a student who wishes to pass the TOEFL.

If you have to teach business Spanish or if a student needs to become bilingual for work, you will need to adapt your courses.
Finally, the rates can be adapted according to the needs of the student: the frequency of the courses is part of determining the fee.
If your student wants to do several classes a week, or work exclusively on Saturday, you must adjust your rates to his or her wishes.
Weekend courses are more expensive than classes during weekdays. A tutor must charge between 5 and 10 USD more for Spanish classes on Sundays.

However, remember that you can always offer your services remotely via Skype to save on time and travel expenses. Doing both Skype and face-to-face classes will allow you to have the most number of students possible for Spanish tutoring.

What Are the Rates for Spanish Tutoring?
As you will have understood, you must set your rates according to the type of class you want to give: private lessons or small group classes with mainly Spanish conversation or Spanish grammar...
To be a good Spanish tutor, you must meet the expectations of your student or the rates will be affected.
According to a recent study, being methodical in your organization of the classes, as well as creativity, are paramount qualities in a teacher and tutor.
Whether it's a more academic or creative method, please adapt yourself so your student can progress!
If you already have an idea of the work you have to provide, it will be easier for you to set an hourly rate.
But what are the concrete tutoring rates in the United States?
Average Rates in the United States
The average rate in the U.S.A is around 20 USD per hour.
Be careful however, because as explained above, this rate varies according to the experience, the level, and the precise location of the tutor.
This hourly rate is a good base to start from, however.
Average Rate Per Town
Not surprisingly, if you live in NYC, your rates will be the highest, with a general average of around 25 USD per hour depending on the specificities of your profile.
Right outside of New York is pretty expensive, too!
Major cities such as Boston, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Detroit have rates around 20 and 22 USD per hour.
If you come from a small town, however, you will have to lower your hourly rate: between 18 and 20 USD per hour depending on your experience.
The Highest Rates
Rates can quickly become higher if you cumulate several important criteria: you reside in NYC, you have 10 years of experience in the field, and you have a degree in teaching. With all that under your belt you will be able to ask for 30 USD an hour.
You must therefore tally up the positive aspects of your resume before asking for your set rate.
Bring evidence of your work experience to justify the price you ask for: any diplomas, your CV...
On the other hand, a teacher who lives in a small town with little experience and no diploma in the field can asl for only about 15 USD per hour.
Be careful not to cut yourself too short in order to seem more attractive of a choice. You should not underestimate yourself to get new customers!
Stay fair and honest with yourself and others, the rest will follow.
Are you Free to Fix Rates?
When you want to become a Spanish tutor, there are two possibilities: go through an after-school tutoring organization or an online tutoring platform.
But what does that mean? Are you allowed to set your own rate? Or do you have to give the organizations a share of what you make?
Fixed Rates with After-School Tutoring Centers
There are many after-school academic support organizations.
Though you may be reassured by their tutoring, you could also be disappointed by how strict they are.
Indeed,after-school academic support organizations do not allow you to set your price. They are the ones who decide your rate.
If you are used to asking a certain rate because of the way you work and the quality of your tutoring, you may be frustrated by their mode of operation.
Flexible Rates with Online Platforms
Online tutoring platforms proceed in the totally opposite way. Each teacher is free to set the rate he or she wants.
This means that here you can talk about what makes you special as a tutor and fix the rate accordingly.
Head over to Superprof to sign up to set your rate. Do not forget to take a quick look at the prices that have already been set in your city in order to come up with a good average.
