Teach French Abroad

As we mentioned, people believe that the Erasmus program is the only opportunity to continue education abroad. But that is not the case, there are plenty of other options.

Have you ever considered the opportunity of teaching abroad? While most consider teaching English abroad as a TEFL teacher, you can also do it as a French tutor if you have the language skills.

You can work in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, language institutions, find an internship as a French teacher for the staff, or even teach French as a private tutor.

How Long Do These Programs Last?

Technically there is no limit to how long these programs can be but this varies depending on the country you go to. But, if there is a job available, you have the right paperwork, and amount of experience, there’s no reason you can’t stay.

Learning and teaching a language is a lengthy process and a regular course ― after immersion ―is the best way for students to learn a language and improve their skills.

There are many temporary job offers and contracts but most of those jobs can become permanent. Just make sure you excel at your job and get good reviews.

What Are the Advantages of Teaching Abroad?

  • You can study in another country and even get a second degree.
  • You can learn more about teaching.
  • You can immerse yourself in a new country and language
  • You earn a salary.

What Is Your Role?

You'll join the teacher during every course session they have per week. Language teachers have an important role because teaching is much more complicated than it seems. You may have to:

  • Help students to speak the language through conversation.
  • Help students to discover the culture of the language.
  • Teach a group of struggling students.
  • Participate in educational activities at the school, college, university, or language center.
Organize an exchange program with native speakers of the language.
  • Run a language club.
  • Organize a trip abroad.
  • Help students prepare for a language certification.

To summarize, your role will be to help students who are learning a new language and assist teachers.

The difference with a teacher is that a teacher will lead a class whereas a language assistant is there to help the teacher.

You need to consider that the working conditions will be different in every country. For example, minimum wages are different, work schedules, and so on.

The amount of work will also vary depending on where you're teaching but you will essentially be expected to plan each French lesson.

Germany, the UK, the USA, Canada, and China are all countries where French is quite a popular language to learn and they are all looking for French teachers.

If you have or plan on getting a TEFL certification you will also be able to teach English and widen your opportunities.

The process is usually similar but some differences are depending on where you apply to. Most programs will ask for a degree in the language and another degree in teaching. You'll be expected to have a minimum of C2 level in French.

The application process can take days, and even weeks. You will have to get all the paperwork required like your transcripts, ID, CV, and so on. Don’t hesitate to ask your host university for help about applying to foreign teaching jobs.

Many schools have agreements with other institutions around the world and many offer financial aid and scholarships.

However, you can always reach out to any institution you're interested in and offer your services as a teacher, you might be surprised with what you find!

Many institutions will promote their teaching jobs on their websites. Usually, you’ll need to provide:

  • CV
  • Cover letter
  • Copy of your degree
  • Copy of your ID

They are looking for people with good teaching profiles, who have a high level of French. But there are jobs for teachers all over the world all year round.

Thanks to the internet, you can easily find teaching jobs online and around the world. All you have to do is go online and look for the perfect job for you. The last step is working out how you'll move there.

Check out the dates you can apply and remember that the process will depend on the academic year you're applying to. You don't really want to try applying once teaching has already begun.

A Year Abroad and Your Degree

If you want teaching experience while you're doing your degree you can do an exchange year as a teaching assistant.

You can take an extra year during your degree to go abroad but you should figure out course credits and requirements with your university.

See if you can transfer credits to your degree if you do a course or two with a foreign university. One of the most common options whilst studying abroad is teaching English as a second language (ESL) and you could do an internship or enroll at a foreign university.

If the costs of living abroad aren't convincing you can always look for what scholarships or financial aid is available for students.

Renew Your Contract Abroad

There's a huge chance you can renew your contract, especially if you're good at your job, you can teach as long as you want abroad. But, the rules are different for many countries.

Some countries offer jobs for as long as the school or university wants you. In other places, you may be limited to how long you can stay at a certain school.

Do you want to start teaching abroad?

Make sure you’re patient and prepared!

If your French level isn't good enough to teach, don't forget that you can teach English abroad and have the opportunity to travel to France and immerse yourself in the language and the culture.

While there, you could also get private tutoring from one of the tutors on Superprof or even get help in attaining a TEFL certificate so you can become an English teacher abroad.
