To me, rock music was never meant to be safe. I think there needs to be an element of intrigue, mystery, subversiveness. Your parents should hate it.

20. The Byrds
The Byrds were one of the most influential American rock bands of the 1960s. Their folk rock, jangle pop, and psychedelic sounds made this Los Angeles group popular with listeners of the time and now.
Their reimagined cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965, and others like "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Eight Miles High" had 12-string guitar work, rich harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics.
19. The Strokes
The Strokes are a garage rock band from New York City that gained fame as one of the most prominent American rock bands of the 2000s.

Their 2001 debut album, Is This It, was a massive hit with tracks like "Last Nite", "Someday", and "Hard to Explain", perhaps one of the greatest American rock albums of all time.
18. Chicago
Chicago's jazz-rock and soft-rock sound helped make them one of the best American rock bands of the 1970s. Their self-titled debut album featured political tracks like "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Beginnings", but their later radio-friendly tracks, such as "If You Leave Me Now" and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry", made them one of the top-selling American rock bands of all time.
17. The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 and fused rock, blues, jazz, and country into a quintessentially American sound.

15. The White Stripes
The White Stripes were a duo from Detroit, Michigan. Their iconic tricolor look and simple guitar and drums combination offered way more than you'd expect.
The 2001 album White Blood Cells was their breakthrough, but it was the 2003 album Elephant and the anthemic “Seven Nation Army” that made them a global act.
14. Santana
Santana brought a unique sound that fused Latin rhythms, rock guitar, and blues in the late 1960s and early 1970s, playing Woodstock in 1969 and releasing hits like "Soul Sacrifice" and "Evil Ways".

The Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in 1983, but they're not really one of the biggest rock bands of the 80s. Instead, they broke into the mainstream with their 1991 album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which featured hits like "Give It Away" and "Under The Bridge".
