About Matt

A lifelong fan of a vast array of music genres, I've devoted my life to my love of music, and more specifically, the technology that makes it possible.

Since before I had all my adult teeth, I've been deeply inspired by sound. My father ran a PA hiring business all through my childhood, and got me involved in it as much as possible, however he could. From the age of 9 I was building PA racks, and helping him with speaker repairs, however I could. Being exposed to what many consider an engineering dark art from such an early age has definitely shaped my life for the better, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunities I had.

Fast forward a few years, and I'm completing the Music Technology A Level in school, alongside personal music projects and working with local event production companies. Following completion of that course, and inspired as ever, I studied under Dan Armstrong, Jason Harris, and Ceri Jones at college. I was lucky to learn the tools of the craft from experienced and insightful professionals, using industry standard equipment, and through tailored tutoring that was designed to help me how I needed it best. I'll never forget the impact those people had on my ability to understand sound. During my time at college, inspired by the course, I started working on musical productions with friends, and started engineering local gigs and shows. Thankfully, this has only grown and developed since.

Fast forward right to the present day. I have engineered stages at several music festivals, working with bands and artists of all genres, and entertaining thousands of people. I have run concerts the full gamut of folk to rock, from jazz to new wave, and disco to dubstep. I've been producing music that gets played in clubs from Bristol to Brixton. I run my own event audio company, providing sound for events of all genres and sizes, utilising custom built equipment. I've built audio systems from scratch for an environmental charity; I've put together my own custom design haptic headphones; I've constructed several fully custom computing systems for studio use; I've installed sound equipment in houses of worship. This industry is full of opportunities, and I've been privileged to have had a broad share of them.

I feel truly blessed to have lived, and to continue to live, through my experiences in the music industry, and I am beyond thankful for the people who showed me the way to here. For me, the Level 3 stage of my education was the turning point, so it would be an honour to provide the support for others that made such a difference to me and my life, in that chapter of theirs.

Hello, I'm Matt, a sound engineer with over a decade of experience in live and recorded sound. I teach all topics under the broad and colourful umbrella of audio, from the fundamentals of sound, through practical techniques for use in the field, up to to higher-level theoretical and experimental concepts. Largely employing analogy and demonstrable experimentation, all content is delivered in a friendly format, and wrapped up in my positive philosophical approach.

Many elements of music technology are complex bundles of simple concepts, and I aim to help my students feel comfortable and empowered in their understanding of them all. With a wide coverage of understanding, At the student's request, or following a supplied curriculum, topics to be covered may include:

- What sound is, how it works, and how we hear it
- Wave theory, wave shapes, and the harmonic series in practice
- Analog and digital audio, file formats, and storage
- Computing for audio purposes, what to buy, and why
- Audio electronics, such as microphones, amplifiers, and speakers
- Synthesis and sound design in Serum, Vital, Massive, and Kick2
- Practical mixing with EQ, compression, saturation, and more
- Drum synthesis and recording, mixing techniques, and theory
- PA system engineering fundamentals

All teaching can be delivered remotely via video call with screen sharing, or, circumstances and resources permitting, in person. Lessons are each between 1 and 2 hours, and may follow the formats of:

- Live demonstrations in audio software
- Live demonstrations of audio hardware
- Shared exercises utilising either private or 3rd party tools
- Open discussions of concepts and theories

If you are currently enrolled in, or are looking to join, a GCSE, A Level, or BTEC course in music technology, and want a friendly and experienced tutor to help guide you through the amazing world of sound, it'd be my pleasure to show you the way. If you've got any other subject matter you'd like to learn more about, or a preferred vehicle for your learning, please feel free to get in touch so we can discuss it and work out a plan that's best for you.
