About Justin

Guitar is a wonderfully versatile instrument, and I see teaching it as an opportunity to unlock each student’s potential, no matter their background or experience level. My teaching philosophy is centered around the idea that everyone learns differently, and by tailoring the lesson to each student’s interests and needs, we create a path that feels natural and sustainable. We start with the fundamentals: posture, finger strength, rhythm, and fretboard fluency. From there, we build outward—exploring chords, scales, and techniques in the context of songs that inspire you. If you’re passionate about indie rock, we might learn alternative tunings and effects; if you love blues, we’ll focus on feel, vibrato, and phrasing. I introduce music theory not as a rigid structure, but as a set of tools to understand and shape your playing. I also prioritize creativity: I’ll encourage you to write your own riffs, jam with loops or backing tracks, and develop your own interpretations of songs. I’ve supported students through a range of goals—from recording albums and auditioning for college programs to simply building the confidence to play for friends. A recent highlight was helping a student compose a multi-part instrumental piece that they later performed with a string quartet. I emphasize steady progress and realistic goal-setting, with regular reflection to keep lessons aligned with your evolving interests. Lessons with me are collaborative, flexible, and focused on nurturing your growth as a player and artist.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching guitar centers on cultivating a deep, intuitive understanding of music while building solid technical skills. We begin with essentials like posture, finger placement, strumming, and chord changes, but always with a strong connection to songs and genres you love—be it blues, folk, rock, or pop. I emphasize practical theory so you understand how chords relate, how rhythm influences groove, and how these elements create the music you want to play.

Communication is vital; I explain concepts in accessible language and frequently check in to tailor lessons to your pace and preferences. I adapt teaching methods to fit your learning style, whether through visual tools, backing tracks, or rhythm exercises using loopers. Learning guitar should feel empowering and enjoyable, not frustrating or confusing. To inspire motivation, I share relatable stories from professional musicians and students who have overcome challenges. Beyond playing, I teach skills like tone development, stage presence, practice efficiency, reading music, and improvisation. Whether your goal is casual playing or professional musicianship, I’m committed to helping you grow with confidence and creativity.
