As stated, I primarily use the Suzuki method, along with other books. I highly encourage practicing consistently at home, and listening to the Suzuki recordings.
A lesson with me would typically go like this:
First, I would tune your violin
Next, I would have you play a tonalization exercise with a metronome
Then, I would open your notebook (that you provide) and see what we did the week before, and go down that list (for example, work in the Suzuki book and in various other method books)
Finally, I would wrap up the lesson with assigning what needs to be practiced, writing it in the notebook.
Additionally, I would like to explain how I use the Suzuki books:
First, I would have students listen to the provided recording of the songs in the book on a regular basis
Next, I would have students pluck or bow the violin (depending on experience level), reading the song with me, breaking the song up into sections
Then, students will practice the assigned part of the song at home and we will make progress on the song each lesson.
After the song is learned, we're not done yet! Students will then memorize the song, breaking it up into sections each week to truly absorb the techniques used in the song
Finally, we'll do a small in-lesson "performance" run-through of the song, and if it doesn't need any more work, we will move on to the next song, learning the more advanced techniques it has to offer, and repeat the process.
I play many instruments (violin, clarinet, soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, and more), and I have the most experience in violin (ten years). I use the Suzuki method and I have a very good grasp on music.
I usually do my lessons for 30 minutes ($20), so that can be arranged.
Peter is an amazing teacher! After working with him for only a short period of time I’ve really been able to master the basics of the violin. He is very well organized and very kind. I highly recommend him.
Peter is an excellent teacher. He explains in a simple manner and is very patient. I would recommend him whether you are a beginner or a long-time musician.
