About Rosa

I'm currently working on my BS in Electrical Engineering and while that does not have a connection to history, I have always been passionate about history. I always felt that my history lessons in school were sort of lacking as my dad is a huge history buff and I loved to read which included historical fiction. As I got older, I learned more about the perspectives that history is written from and got interested in understanding the full context of history when looking at the perspectives I wasn't taught. I did do well on AP history exams in high school as well as on the AP Human Geography exam.
I have experience with neurodivergent students and being neurodivergent myself, I understand the difficulties that come from many traditional classroom settings and so I like to meet all of my students where they are and formulate lessons around their passions to help encourage them.

Many students find history boring in school as current testing requirements often require teachers to move quickly on only the tested topics. I want to allow for expansion on topics to help reinforce learning as well as for students' understanding of how history has many different perspectives.
I would want to begin lessons by talking about age and grade-appropriate current events and answering questions they may have about events they have seen. For example, with kindergarteners, I might talk about baby animals that were recently born while with middle and high schoolers we may discuss more pressing local, national, and international news with differentiation based on age and grade. I want my history lessons to be more structured as discussions, wanting my students to make evaluations of history through their own eyes while still providing them with the facts of what's going on.
I want to help my students also understand the context in which certain parts of history occur as sometimes it's hard for students to understand situations in which history occurs and the role it plays in events. Part of my lessons will hopefully also allow me to bring in different kinds of evidence for history and culture to show students during lessons, such as art, music, food, etc. (it will depend on the subject and grade level of course).
I have experience working with and communicating with neurodivergent students and want to encourage those students to succeed without actively working against them which tends to, unfortunately, happen in more traditional classroom settings. This may mean encouraging students to draw while we work or get up and have a mini dance party or even just only communicate through chat if they are feeling overwhelmed.

Much of the first lesson will be focused on us making sure we're a good match for each other in terms of tutoring as well as getting an idea of where struggles are. With the student (and parent/guardian in certain situations) I want to be able to sit down and make a plan about how to effectively move forward.
I am willing to do group tutoring with an additional charge per student, though not as much as for an additional tutoring session. I am hoping to charge each extra person about one-third to one-half of the price of a solo session though that is subject to change.
