Hello everyone!

My name is Jeffrey and I am a classically-trained violist, violinist, conductor and viola/violin teacher in the Metro Vancouver area. Whether you have plans of becoming a professional musician or want to learn for fun, I am here to help you achieve wherever your musical endeavours have taken you to in life! I provide my students with a strong musical foundation that allows them to learn music that they are passionate about, and to help them develop a consistent, efficient practice routine that allows for constant musical progress and growth.

For complete beginners, my go-to method book is Janice Tucker Rhoda's "The ABC's of Strings". These books combine melodies from classical music standards, folk and fiddle tunes, rock 'n roll and jazz, and improvisation, and Ms. Tucker Rhoda's original compositions of these various styles along with warm-up exercises, scales and study pieces. There are simple graphs showing left-hand finger placement, and practice charts in all of the books. Each absolute beginner book has additional duets, worksheets for note identification and a glossary of music terms and symbols. The ABCs of Strings is designed with student and teacher in mind, and is compatible with current and classic methods. Throughout the series, new concepts, no matter how tricky or challenging, are introduced in an easy-to-learn manner that is enjoyable for the student and teacher. Students advance gradually, logically and thoroughly to playing proficiently in a way that makes learning a stringed instrument easy and fun. They develop a solid foundation from the beginning. Difficulty levels in the series range from absolute beginner to budding virtuoso.

If my students leave their lesson feeling excited to go home and practice, then I have done my job! As they say at that uber-famous fast food restaurant chain with the golden arches, smiles are free, and nothing brings greater joy to the learning experience than a positive environment.

Late-beginner to advanced students are typically given the option of going through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), which has a mainly classical music-oriented curriculum and exam for each level of the program. In preparation for RCM exams, students develop their technique and finger dexterity at the piano, and develop a theoretical understanding of music, as well as the ability to express emotions and ideas through musical elements like dynamics, tempo, rubato, shaping, articulation, and phrasing.

For those wishing to study popular music genres, lessons will focus on important skills such as chord formation, harmonization, lead sheets, choral music, and improvisation. Students can also learn practical applications to these skills, such as playing music at weddings or special events.

Whether your focus is classical or popular music, performing in public is highly encouraged. It is an integral component of student progress, as it can solidify their grasp of their current repertoire and help develop stage presence and confidence. Students are encouraged to perform in RCM exams, Kiwanis Festival, student recitals, and volunteer to play at senior home concerts.

Lastly, parental involvement in students’ musical journey is highly recommended; I teach my students in their piano lesson for only 30 to 60 minutes a week, but what matters more is the 6 days at home when the student is practicing, and how they utilize their time. Parents play an important role in encouraging their children, in helping them maintain a consistent and diligent practice schedule, and in celebrating their accomplishments and progress.

I look forward to meeting you all and embarking on a musical journey. Let’s find out what we can accomplish together!
