About Katie

I am a Dartmouth graduate who believes that learning should be engaging, useful, and hopefully a little fun. I might even convince my students that being smart and knowing a lot is cool, and getting there does not need to be rigid or make students miserable.

I have been tutoring for 15+ years in schools, privately, and for a nonprofit. After a few years away, I've come back to tutoring because it seems like many students need individually tailored help to overcome pandemic-related learning gaps. I'm good at identifying what a student needs help with and how best to help them learn it in a way that helps them succeed and feel good about themselves and their work.

About the lesson

Every student is different, and needs a tutoring program tailored to their current needs and future goals. I take a low stress, casual approach to tutoring that I believe helps students learn in a way that they look forward to rather than dread.

I have found that most math students benefit from having subjects explained in multiple ways that may not have been covered in class, using different tools like computer graphing or video demonstrations, as well as working through practice problems step by step together.

For standardized test prep, I usually begin with teaching a student how to take the test more strategically so they can improve their score with the knowledge they already have. Then we focus on what they need to learn or review content-wise that will most easily improve their scores.

I have taught writing many ways for many reasons, but outlining and thought organization prewriting seems to be particularly useful to students. Writing is creative, but there are some clear paths to make it less overwhelming and improve the quality of a student's writing.

I usually work with students in 5th through 12th grade on writing and test prep. For math, I tutor Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and basic statistics and visual data representation.
