  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I use ASL fluently because I am deaf. I use ASL every single day allows me to communicate with others. ASL is beautiful language and I love to teach people learns ASL!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Helen Keller was a remarkable American educator, disability activist and author. She is the most famous DeafBlind person in history.
In 1882, Keller was 18 months old and fell ill with an acute illness which caused her to become deaf, blind and mute. She described this childhood experience in her autobiography later as "being at sea in a dense fog".

Keller lived at a time when there was almost no support for DeafBlind people, and she developed her own way of communicating as a young child through basic signs and feeling vibrations. Keller was then introduced to Anne Sullivan, who became her lifelong friend and teacher. Sullivan taught Keller how to finger spell and communicate in other ways.
Keller went on to study at university and became a writer and founder of the Hellen Keller International (HKI) organization, supporting blind people. She advocated regularly for Deaf rights as well, as a public speaker and activist.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Being culturally Deaf means sharing the beliefs, values, traditions, moral attitudes, manners, and ways of the Deaf community. Values in the Deaf community include the importance of clear communication for all both in terms of expression and comprehension. Deaf residential schools and Deaf clubs are important because of the natural social interaction they offer.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Sign language allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to enjoy rights just like anyone else, they are able to learn, work, and socialize. Sign language uses hand positions and movement to communicate and has existed for centuries.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I'd say for native English speakers, there are two components that is hardest to master: Learning to comprehend and produce language in the visual/manual modality without auditory stimuli or cues. Attending to and especially producing facial grammatical as well as emotive signals.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Studying ASL promotes better awareness of and sensitivity to the deaf and hard of hearing community. As someone proficient in ASL, you will develop a strong appreciation for deaf culture, and you can promote understanding and acceptance of the language among others.
Offering ASL courses promotes cultural awareness amongst students and educates students on Deaf culture, increasing student awareness of the cultural diversity they may have not known is present within their school. When creating ASL curriculum for beginning students, it's important to teach signs in groups.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I used to open my own ASL Club for two years when I was student in college. Many students always asked me to help with their ASL homework. I decided to open up my own ASL Club where students can come in to learn some ASL and help with their ASL homeworks. It helped me to increase my skill and knowledge of ASL language because I helped a lot of students.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Superprof is a great for me to use and teach people to learn ASL language as well as all the students are in different states and even other country is which I find is very cool!
