About Ian

One of my most rewarding experiences as a tutor was helping a student who was struggling with chemistry. When they first came to me, they were scoring around 30% on their tests and were at risk of failing the course. They felt overwhelmed by the material and lacked confidence in their ability to improve.

I started by identifying the areas where they were struggling the most, such as understanding basic chemical equations and concepts like stoichiometry. I broke down these topics into smaller, more manageable parts and used real-world examples to make them relatable. Instead of just memorizing formulas, I focused on helping them understand the 'why' behind the concepts.

As we worked together, I noticed that the student responded well to hands-on activities, so I incorporated more interactive experiments and visual aids into our sessions. Gradually, they began to grasp the material, and their confidence grew. I also helped them develop better study habits, teaching them how to organize their notes and approach problem-solving systematically.

After several weeks of consistent effort, their test scores started to improve. By the time the state exam approached, they were scoring in the 70s and 80s on practice tests. On the actual state exam, they achieved a score of 92%, well above the mastery level.

Seeing this transformation from struggling to excelling was incredibly fulfilling for me. It reinforced my belief that with the right support and dedication, any student can overcome academic challenges and succeed.

About the lesson
