About Eleni Thomai
I was a teaching fellow as an undergraduate at Paris Observatory, France (3 years) and later a graduate student at Leiden University, The Netherlands (4 years), teaching science courses on the elementary and secondary level. During my 2 years at Yale University, USA and later at the National Observatory of Athens, Greece, I have delivered several guest lectures, mentored a number of undergraduate students and advised several among them on their senior projects. Over the past 8 years as a faculty at City University of Seattle, Athens site, I have taught science and astronomy courses, algebra, calculus, and statistics to students enrolled in all undergraduate programs (BSc in computer science, business, psychology, tourism). My students usually excel in their science courses after a few months with me and some went on following science careers later on. My collaboration with students goes well beyond the classroom, into the research domain and indeed I have co-authored papers with some of the students I advised in the past.

I am an Astrophysicist with 20+ years experience in both research and teaching. I teach students at all levels, and age groups.
Although the different audiences and their varying levels of science appreciation require different teaching strategies, my overall goal is to inspire a genuine sense of curiosity and open-mindedness. My main teaching philosophy is to promote inquiry based learning methods, moving from the old paradigm of passive learning to a new teaching model centered on the students, tailor-made to their interests and learning abilities. When communicating new information to my students, I do not expect them to just memorize facts, but to rather learn how to think and see the big picture beyond the fundamental building blocks of theory. More often than not I engage in interactive teaching and hands-on activities.
