About Steven
I have completed my Doctor of Engineering in Medical Devices studies at the University of Strathclyde. My research project aims to design a computerised rehabilitation system and its artificial intelligence components for training the sit-to-stand movements in geriatric patients. The work was strongly correlated to my Master of Engineering degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. The degree mainly combines software engineering, electronic system design, digital and analogue electronics.
In the past semesters, I was working as a teaching assistant and demonstrator for post and undergraduate programs at the university. The roles involved preparing teaching materials, delivering lectures and tutorials in front of a lecture room in an understandable and clear manner, demonstrating and leading motion capture laboratory sessions. This was led from my tutoring experience which I had supervised the students’ fieldwork, reviewed and graded assignments with written and oral feedback.

Although my doctorate degree is in the fields of biomedical engineering, most parts of the research project were computer and software engineering related. To me, both disciplines are absorbing and interesting subjects, where there is always something new to learn. I’m fascinated and attracted by the dynamic environment in which new technologies, processes and methodologies are being invented all the time. However, this would only be continued if new talents were inspired to join the fields in the first place.
I believe this is especially true when teaching engineering. It is not only about transferring knowledge from textbooks but informing first hand industrial and research experience. The valuable experience that I obtained during an electronics industrial placement in ATEEDA and a four-year research position had also strengthened my capability of equipping future generations with the skills that are critical to their career development and motivations to embrace the goal.
