About Paul
Hi, I'm Paul. Like you, I started life with a dream: I wanted to make music. By age 5, I was already trying to compose. I would write notes in my dictation book and have my mother play them on the piano.
After years of piano study, I started learning guitar because I wanted to play in a band. I wrote my first song at the age of 18 and from there my creativity grew. After playing in bands for 10 years, I studied music composition in university, completing an undergraduate degree, masters degree, and doctoral degree.
I also play cello, and much of my strong left hand technique on guitar was adapted from what I learned playing the cello.
I perform and record music, and I write music with a vast palette with many colours and instruments. I also write classical music for chamber ensembles and orchestras.
I have taught music lessons since 2008 and I leverage my skills and knowledge to help students develop a strong musical foundation which allows them to go in the direction they want to with their craft

I help students develop their ear and their understanding of music. I associate sounds with conceptual names -modes, harmonies, etc- and have students practice these concepts to that they can understand them aurally. I also focus on developing efficient technique to maximize speed and dexterity while guarding against playing related injuries.
Lessons typically focus on the guitar from several key angles:
-Technique and movement in scales, playing linearly, joining scales across the neck of the guitar, playing sequences, etc.
-Learning passages from written solos.
-Working on improvising.
-Chord changes and finger picking.
-Rhythm playing and strumming technique.
-Learning and playing riffs and songs.
-Writing riffs and exploratory playing.
-Learning by ear.
-Music theory and note reading.
As a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and university educated musician, I am musically bilingual. I 'speak' North American Music i.e. rock guitar as well as Classical Music i.e. note reading etc. I am able to approach teaching in a wholistic manner which broadens the horizons of the players who work with me. My versatility allows for musicians to develop in a way that blends head knowledge with musical intuition and understanding. The student can learn both what sounds good and why.
I am interested in teaching beginners up to higher level intermediate players, or any advanced players -or anyone- who is wanting to develop their creativity and riff / songwriting chops.

Hes really knowlegable in any topic of music. Any question i ask he has a answer for. Hes helped me with my techique alot and has me playing and sounding proper. And he makes it fun and interesting.
Paul is an incredible teacher. He’s adaptable, friendly, and willing to change for the better of the student. When I first met him I was a complete beginner. He taught me what i needed to know and helped me grow and develop as a guitar player. He has helped me get into a jazz band and prepare for the audition. I came in as a complete beginner and now I am more than capable of carrying my weight in a competitive musical enviroment.
