About Elena

I am an experienced graphic designer, illustrator and comic book artist who has worked for both big and small companies.

I have studied drawing for more than ten years and explored different types of techniques and methods. I am interested in how, in order to learn to draw well, we first need to deconstruct the way we tend to see reality - i.e. in a schematic way. I have also been a teacher and tutor for more than 3 years.

I have completed the Master Level II in Visual Development at IDEA Academy in Rome, and I have studied comics and animation for 6 years.

This knowledge will help me guide you in the fascinating yet mysterious steps we need to take to learn to draw "naturally". I hope to help you build a solid drawing foundation that can support you in all your future projects.

*NOTE: at the moment only the drawing feedback sessions are available*

The needs of the learners are the starting point of my classes. I discuss with my students the reasons they are learning to draw and on which projects they want to direct their skill. Based on this I direct the student's attention on what exactly to pay attention to (drawing is also an observation skill!), and on how to develop specific skills linked to the fields of design, animation or comics.

FEEDBACK SESSIONS
Practice is essential for drawing, and especially guided practice - these is why I designed these £15/30-minute sessions. You can decide to have feedback sessions live or to receive emails with comments on your drawings.

LIVE FEEDBACK SESSIONS
We will meet on Zoom for 30 minutes. You will need to send me your drawings before the session. During the session we will review your drawings - I will do a paint-over and add notes to help correct anatomy, perspective, movement, expression, etc. I will then recommend specific exercises to improve the issues noted. These exercises will target highly specific skills and will be possibly supported by suggestions of courses, resources, books and references so you can keep the learning self-paced.
You will ideally bring these exercises to the following feedback session to check your improvements.
Feedback sessions are a great way to keep yourself motivated to practice.

EMAIL FEEDBACK SESSIONS
You can decide not to meet on Zoom and to just send me your drawings to review instead. The advantage with this system is that I will be able to send you an in-depth review of your drawings, with lots of notes on how to improve them at your own pace. The feedback will probably be deeper than in the live sessions but I won't be able to explain the corrections on the spot. However, if you have any doubts on my notes, I will always be happy to clarify them with you. This method is most suitable for people who want to improve without the need to commit to Zoom calls.

CLASSES
My classes are normally structured as follows:
- I present the topic, with visual examples, and ask the student to analyse what they see, directing their attention to the important features
- I show the student how to apply the rules discovered. I draw examples with my graphic tablet and I share my screen for the student to see the process
- I give in-class exercises to the student, so they can apply what is learnt
- I ask the student to show me what they did and provide feedback
- I give some homework relevant to the class. No homework is obligatory, but it's good for the student to practise.

I am looking forward to seeing you and helping you improve!

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

My mum is a children's books illustrator who illustrated more than 90 books, so I had the luck to start practicing drawing from a very young age under her supervision. I was always inclined to drawing, and at 14 I joined one of the two main comics schools in Rome. That's when I started considering drawing as a career.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

After studying comics for 5 years I joined an animation school, so my early influences where artists in the world of graphic novels, like Gipi and Manuele Fior, and animation, like Glen Keane and Claire Wendling. However, later I became more interested in the history of art and illustration and in graphic design, so now my style is affected by too many artists to be able to mention!
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

I think mainly a combination of two opposite qualities: the ability to create something unique and creative, and the ability to 'stay in style' and be relatable. The industry requires artists that are adaptable and can work in a team, but can also bring a new twist to what has already been made.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Don't expect immediate results and don't get discouraged. There are so many factors affecting someone's success in the world of art - and it's not really a linear path, unfortunately, but there is space for everyone if you find your voice and your people. But you have to have the spirit of the freelancer at least a little.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

I am curious about ANY visual style, and it's easy for me to absorb information from and want to experiment with those styles myself. The reason I draw is linked to my insatiable interest in the visual world. It comes very natural to me.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am proud of some professional achievements as well as some creative ones. On a professional level, I worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as a graphic designer, as well as for many sustainable businesses. Feeling that art can be used to do something good for the world is great! On a purely creative level, I am very proud of one comic book I wrote and drew - it's very fulfilling to be an author.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

The students that impress me the most are the ones that keep drawing, do their homework and pursue personal projects. Drawing is a 'glamorous' skill, so it's easy for people to be attracted to it and then drop it when they realise there is hard work and a long time needed to improve. It's way too easy to tell oneself 'it's all down to talent and I don't have it'. The students that keep going through the difficult times are the ones I know are going to make massive improvements.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I do have a secret! While I was studying art I also got a degree in foreign languages and taught foreign languages on the side for almost 4 years. Teaching languages is way more structured than teaching drawing most of the time, so I learnt a lot about being a good drawing tutor while teaching something else!
