WORD WORK
Objective: Students will be able to know the silent “e” along with other common vowel teams by conventions for representing long vowel sounds.
CCSS:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.C:
"Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds."
Step by step procedures:
9:00am- 9:05
Watch the video on silent e and long vowels to activate background knowledge
Tom Lehrer - "Silent E"
We will also review this anchor chart and will discuss what he knows about how the silent e makes the vowel say its name.
9:05 am-9:15 am
Do you know any words that you can change to by adding an E so the first vowel says its name?
If yes, ask the student to name and write down the words he knows, make sure he writes both words. For example, he can write can/cane or pan/pane.
If not, give him this word scramble sheet and have him practice by unscrambling the words and ask him what he notices about the words that he is able to create.
Allow him to build up to 5 words, if he would like to create 5 more once he is done he may do so if the time allows for it.
9:15am-9:30am
We do
(concealed information)
play this board game to build more silent “e” words.
We will found on teacher pay teacher
this is a two player gave,
Each player will have 5 cards and places in front of them. They will take turns placing the letters to finish the word but if a player can’t create a word they have to forfeit and allow the other player to try. The first player to build 5 words wins the game.

CCSS:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.8
With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Step by step procedures:
9:35 am-9:40am
Imagine you are a dragon for one day, you can choose anywhere in the world to travel to because you can fly, where would you go? Now brainstorm using the chart below.
discussion points
What are characters?
How do events in a story make it interesting?
What is the setting in the story?
Hi I am so excited to begin brainstorming about your story today! We are going to brainstorm ideas together based on the question above and come up with a beginning, middle, and end for your story. One of the most important things to have for a story is a title so first we need to come up with a title then we can come up with names of characters, the setting, and what you want the story to be about.
9:40-9:55am
activating background knowledge
Story Elements Part 1: Characters, Setting, and Events | English For Kids | Mind Blooming
watch this video about story elements to get him thinking about what story elements are and the importance of them in any story or book. Remember: you can not have a story without all of these important pieces.
Together we will use the brainstorming graphic organizer together to come up with a title for your story and come up with 3 major events for your story. Of course we need the setting, and names of characters as well.

Preview and predict
Today we are going to read the story “Frog and Toad are Friends” . We are going to preview the book before reading and predict what might happen in the story by discussing what you notice in the story by looking at the pictures.
What do you think will happen in this book based on the cover?
What do you notice about the characters?
What do you think might happen in the story?
10:05am-10:15am
Echo reading and taking notes
Together we will echo read the first chapter of the book by taking turns reading one page at a time. We will stop 2-3 times throughout the first chapter to write on a sticky note an important event we want to remember and put it in the book.
I will have a series of questions to ask before we read the book but while we are reading,
I will also show the student the importance of writing important pieces that happen and this will teach him that it is ok to stop, pause and reflect on what you have read so far.
By taking the time to read the chapter and stopping by writing down important things we notice, he will be more likely to remember what is happening throughout the first chapter.
Pause and reflect
write down 2-3 details on sticky notes
modeling
This demonstrates how to identify key details, making sure to explain why this is important.
What do you think is important so far?
Would you like to add anything to my sticky note that you think is important to remember?
What can you tell me about what just happened in the story? Would you like to write it down?
What do you notice about how the characters feel about what happened?
10:15-10:25 am
Retelling
once you are finished with the first chapter
Ask the student to look back and retell the events of what happened in the story. He may use the sticky notes as a guide. Ask him to mention at least 2 events that he noticed so far in the story.
Wrap up
10:25-10:30 am
Talk about what you will work on tomorrow and ask if there are any books he is interested in to check out so he can read before bed!
Materials
Frog and Toad are Friends the book
