About Olivia
Teaching saxophone has been an incredibly rewarding journey, allowing me to engage with students at all levels—from curious beginners eager to hold their first instrument to advanced players seeking to deepen their improvisational skills and musicality. My approach centers on developing a solid technical foundation that includes proper breath support, embouchure formation, finger technique, and rhythmic accuracy. I emphasize tone development as a cornerstone, guiding students to cultivate a warm, focused sound through exercises that build control over dynamics, articulation, and vibrato. Technique and expression are inseparable; as students grow in facility, I encourage them to infuse each phrase with intention and emotion, helping their playing resonate beyond just notes on a page. Music theory and ear training are woven naturally into lessons, always contextualized within the pieces and styles students are passionate about. Whether working through jazz standards, classical solos, or contemporary pieces, I strive to make theory a practical tool for understanding musical structure and enhancing creativity. Improvisation is a key pillar of my teaching philosophy. From early stages, students are invited to experiment with simple motifs, rhythmic variations, and call-and-response exercises that build listening skills and creative confidence. I believe improvisation fosters not only technical skills but also personal voice and spontaneity—qualities essential for any expressive musician. Each lesson is personalized to align with the student’s goals, be it audition preparation, ensemble playing, or self-expression. A memorable success involved a high school student preparing for college auditions; through targeted tone exercises, repertoire selection, and mock performances, they earned scholarships and grew as a confident artist. I support students in establishing effective, consistent practice habits and setting achievable milestones, ensuring progress feels both steady and rewarding. Whether aiming for professional performance or lifelong enjoyment, my mission is to nurture technically skilled, musically expressive saxophonists who find joy and purpose in their playing.

In my saxophone studio, I aim to cultivate musicians who are not only technically proficient but also deeply connected to the emotional essence of the music they play. I believe that the saxophone is a powerful tool for storytelling, and my teaching focuses on helping students develop their unique musical narrative. We begin with the fundamentals—tone production, articulation, and rhythm—ensuring that students have the technical skills necessary to express themselves fully.
From there, we delve into the rich world of jazz, exploring its history, its masters, and its evolving language. Ear training is a cornerstone of my curriculum; I believe that a well-developed ear is crucial for both improvisation and interpretation. Students learn to transcribe solos, recognize harmonic structures, and internalize musical phrases, all of which enhance their ability to improvise with confidence and creativity. Improvisation is not just about playing notes; it's about communicating emotions and ideas. I encourage students to take risks, to play with intention, and to listen actively to the music around them.
We use a variety of tools, including backing tracks, transcriptions, and composition exercises, to develop these skills. Performance is also an integral part of my teaching. I guide students through the process of preparing for and delivering compelling performances, focusing on stage presence, expression, and connection with the audience. My goal is to help students become not only skilled saxophonists but also passionate musicians who can move others with their music.
