About Jessica
I am a dedicated advocate and tutor specializing in supporting children with learning disabilities. With a compassionate and creative approach, I use an out-of-the-box teaching style tailored to meet each child’s unique needs. My sessions are built around heavy use of accommodations and modifications, ensuring that every student feels seen, heard, and empowered to succeed. Whether through visual aids, simplified content, hands-on activities, or alternative communication methods, I meet students where they are—helping them grow in confidence, skills, and independence.

Warm-up (5 minutes) Quick review: “What is the main idea?” Use a simple visual (like a hamburger model) to reinforce concept. Ask guiding questions: “What is the big thing this paragraph is telling us?” 2. Mini Lesson (10 minutes) Read passage aloud (once by tutor, second time using audio for auditory learners). Use highlighters to mark the main idea in blue and supporting details in yellow. Model one example together on whiteboard. 3. Guided Practice (10 minutes) Student reads a new paragraph (modified if needed). Complete a main idea/detail graphic organizer together. Tutor prompts with sentence starters, e.g., "The main idea is..." or "One detail that supports it is..." 4. Independent Practice (5 minutes) Student completes a short 3-sentence paragraph and fills in a blank graphic organizer. Use timer and provide encouragement or fidget tool if needed. Accommodations & Modifications Reading level: Simplified text version available Audio support: Pre-recorded reading Visual supports: Graphic organizer, color-coding, sentence stems Behavioral: Breaks built in, praise every 5 minutes Processing: Extra time, check-ins for understanding Written output: Allow verbal responses if needed Assessment Informal observation Completion of graphic organizer Exit ticket: student states main idea and one detail verbally or in writing Reflection / Notes Did the student stay engaged?
