About Marybeth

Hi! My name is Marybeth :) I've always been fascinated with languages. I was born in the UK and grew up speaking English as my first language. I then moved to Ireland with my family when I was young and learnt both French and Irish as a second language at school. I studied French and Japanese at university and spent one year in Japan, where I learnt Japanese and even beginners Spanish through Japanese! While there I completed my TEFL certification and taught English to Japanese people ranging from age 4 to 20. My 4 year university degree was in Applied Language and Translation Studies, so I not only learnt language, but the science behind language learning and how to make it more effective. As an adult, I taught English as a second language to an Eastern European lady who wanted to improve her understanding and use of English grammar. My goal is to make learning English as fun and as simple as possible!

About the lesson

At the first lesson, we will get to know each other and talk about your level and goals! :) For accent reduction: We will start the lessons with a vocal warm-up to relax tension in the mouth, tongue, jaw and vocal cords. This makes it much easier to practise making sounds you are not used to making! Then we will use a combination of watching and listening to native speakers, mimicking the way their mouth moves. I will help by giving you feedback and letting you know how to position your tongue to make the correct sounds. For English lessons: After assessing your English at our first lesson, I will tailor your lesson plan to correct your most common pitfalls first, whether that is vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation. We will use multiple resources including books and videos at your level for practice. You will also be given a list at the end of each lesson to take home of what we have covered.

She has been extremely helpful these past few months in getting me to pass higher japanese for the leaving cert. Not only has she been helpful with any questions, but she has encouraged me to continue to learn and has helped me to understand my flaws when trying to learn. By helping me understand better study techniques, I was able to complete a 2 year course in only 6 months! I have nothing but appreciation for Marybeth as a fantastic tutor who is always communicative when it comes to our schedual and is always free outside of classes for any questions. For these reasons, I can not help but recommend Marybeth for anyone trying to learn japanese.
