About Kristen

Hello and welcome! I am an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) student-teacher based in the Maryland/D.C./Virginia area. I am currently working towards earning my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification through the International TEFL Academy, an internationally accredited institution for EFL teachers worldwide. Currently, I am also an online EFL tutor through Cambly, an online platform for English Language Learners around the world. Additionally, I have 3 years of experience volunteering as a tutor and teacher's assistant for elementary, high school, and Special Education students. I have an extensive background working with all ages from young learners to older adults needing help with business and college-level English. I also have experience in theatre and performance, which can be a great help to those who want presentation, public speaking, and interview practice. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

English

We learn best when we are comfortable, excited, and can approach concepts naturally. Teaching anything, especially a language, should be naturally molded into daily life and activities. My teaching approach is exactly this. I believe in a student-centered classroom where I am guiding and prompting the student to problem-solve and think on their own while I add corrections and clarification along the way. My teaching approach is communicative, natural, and humanistic. This means that all of my teaching is in English (our goal!) and in a very welcoming environment for each student. I use a variety of methods to best suit each student in a class, including theme-based learning, task-based activities, and small project-based activities. I have found that individualizing topics to the student's needs and interests also works best. Prior to each lesson, I have a handful of topics that may appeal to a wide variety of interests which I allow the student to select. From there, this is how I plan my lesson accordingly. Because, after all, it is completely about the student and how the student will be using English in daily life.

I offer lessons on the following focuses:

ENGLISH FOR ADULTS

~ Conversation Practice
~ Topics will vary by students; the main focus is speaking and listening, but other elements from reading and writing may be incorporated as well.
~ Business English: Job Interviews; Business Meetings; Emails; Business Calls
~ Reading and Writing: I use articles, dialogue, short stories, and audio for practice. Each is followed by comprehension and discussion questions. The main focus is reading and writing but speaking, and listening is also incorporated.

ENGLISH FOR YOUNG LEARNERS (2-11 years old; very beginner)

~ Introductions: What's your name? Where do you live? How old are you?
~ Colors and shapes: What do you see?
~ How are you?
~ Alphabet and numbers
~ What time is it?
~ Actions
~ Emotions

MORE FOR YOUNG LEARNERS (2-11 years old, more advanced)

~ Conversation practice topics with more emphasis on grammar.
~ What did you do yesterday? (about the past)
~ What are you going to do tomorrow? (about the future)
~ Daily/weekly routines
~ More added and emphasized as the specific needs and interests of student(s) are met.
