About Kaity
My saxophone teaching philosophy centers on empowering students to become versatile, self-assured musicians through a synergy of disciplined technique and creative discovery. I establish physical foundations—breath control, embouchure development, posture alignment, finger technique, and tone consistency—to support healthy, long-term playing. From the start, I encourage expressive coloring through subtle phrasing, tasteful vibrato, dynamic range, and articulation nuance. I teach music theory as a constructive tool, showing students how scales, chord progressions, and harmonic functions inform improvisation and interpretation in the pieces they play. Improvisation is woven into every lesson: we begin simply with echoing tonal patterns, move into scale-based constructs, and evolve toward complete melodic expression. This approach builds musical independence and respect for creative exploration. Student interest drives repertoire choice—jazz melodies, classical duets, pop songs, or film themes—keeping lessons engaging and personally meaningful. Structured goal-setting and practice routines support progress aligned with milestones like auditions, recitals, or creative projects. A highlight in my teaching was supporting a student who transitioned from reluctant improviser to confident soloist leading a small ensemble—powered by a newfound sense of voice. My mission is to nurture saxophonists who are technically sound, musically curious, stage-ready, and deeply connected to the joy of creating their own sound.

In my saxophone studio, I strive to create a space where students feel empowered to take ownership of their musical journey. I believe that learning an instrument is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about developing a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us. I begin each lesson by assessing the student's current level and setting clear, achievable goals. This collaborative approach ensures that the student feels invested in their learning process and understands the purpose behind each exercise and piece of music.
Technique is a priority in my teaching, but I also emphasize the importance of musicality. I encourage students to think beyond the notes on the page, to interpret the music with their own voice, and to connect emotionally with the repertoire. I incorporate a variety of musical styles into lessons, from classical etudes to contemporary pop songs, to expose students to different musical traditions and to keep lessons engaging. For students interested in improvisation, I provide a structured approach that includes ear training, scale practice, and improvisation exercises.
I believe that improvisation is a powerful tool for developing creativity and musical expression. Technology is a valuable asset in my teaching. I use recording devices to allow students to listen back to their performances, helping them identify areas for improvement and track their progress over time. I also utilize digital resources such as sheet music apps and metronomes to enhance practice sessions. Beyond technical instruction, I aim to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment.
I celebrate each student's achievements, no matter how small, and encourage them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. My ultimate goal is to help students become not only proficient saxophonists but also confident, expressive musicians who find joy in their musical journey.
