Methodology

My approach to tuition, is to ensure an empathetic attitude towards a new student, so they feel relaxed and safe to learn. Then, via encouragement and discussion, discover what interests them and any problem areas they feel they would like to focus on, before asking them to complete a piece of free writing on a topic of their choice. This free writing will be the first indicator to me of some areas the student will need to practise. Feedback is given and discussion with the student of the results takes place, before decisions for the next steps are consulted and agreed upon. This is the first stage of initial assessment that I take with all my students and has proved to be successful and non-threatening.

From this point, I will be able to diagnostically assess using bespoke resources (paper-based and e-learning) to divulge any areas of need and I will also look to discover whether not just how a student learns (either by watching, listening or doing, or by a combination of these approaches) but if they should require resources in a particular font, line spacing, or coloured paper/overlays. This is imperative for the student to be able to access the information they are needing to learn and practise.

Using the diagnostic results as a base line, the student and I will discuss the results and focus on setting an I.L.P. (Independent Learning Plan) to organise and concentrate which area is to be studied first. This is done to assure the student that they won't be overwhelmed with the subject and that the subject for practise, will go comfortably at their pace of learning and be taught in an approach that suits their way of learning. Targets will be set with agreement of the student and once successfully met, advice and guidance given and discussed, then another target is let.

Reading is encouraged on a subject or, genre and in a format which the student enjoys. This is a form of homework that is again is designed to work around the student's schedule/lifestyle. Homework is set but is not overwhelming and is part of the discussion when beginning study. If this is off putting then alternatives can be used.

This way of learning has been a extremely good way for students of all ages and abilities to learn the basics of English and whether it is just these skills required for the student to practise, or whether it is required alongside other areas of English within Key Stages taught at school/college, it enables the student to have a foundation of knowledge from which to access, assess and evaluate all types of text when reading and responding, and enables them to plan, organise and evaluate their writing well.

The student and I will discuss their progression and I will offer advice and guidance on this matter, often recommending additional learning resources and websites that are specifically useful for further study, or to enable them to practise their skills.

I have taught on and designed bespoke courses for 18 years, including G.C.S.E. English, including creating exam questions, assessment, standardising and marking for the exam board A.Q.A.

I enjoy immensely the looks on students' faces, when they understand the area they have a problem with and go on to flourish, whether it be in school, college, university courses, or in the workplace, by either understanding the area of study, or by passing their exams. It is that beaming look of self-belief and confidence in themselves that ensures I continue to tutor and do my best with each student.
Experience

As an experienced and postgraduate tutor/teacher, I am qualified to teach children and adults from Entry Level Literacy to A' Level English Language/Literature. All my students can self-confidently attest to working hard, enjoying the classes and passing their Literacy/English exams with flying colours!
