About Susan
I was a substitute teacher for the same school district, off and on, for over 20 years. I've seen many changes in the school system, as this was the same school district that I graduated from. I've learned that some teachers don't listen to their students and simply follow the rules set forth by administration. I didn't like this, but couldn't do anything about it, because I was working in the system. As a tutor, I don't have to follow the school district guidelines. I can listen to my students, and what they need.
I've worked for many different companies, and had many different jobs. So, I know a little about a lot of things. While I can teach Math, I've also been a Computer Trainer, Administrator, Business Owner, Insurance Agent, etc. So, if you need help with something besides Math, just ask.

Each student is different, and has a different learning style. I LISTEN TO THE STUDENT and what they need, and I proceed accordingly. I have mostly taught 6-8, but I currently work other grades (because it's 1-on-1). I don't have a 'typical lesson plan', because every student is different, which means that I must adjust accordingly. This means that my lessons are 'student-focused'. The lesson needs to be meaningful to the student, so they will retain the information. For example, if they like to work in a garden, I make the math problems about gardening; if they like fishing, then the problems relate to fishing; the same with cooking, sewing, construction, etc. Math is not a 'one size fits all' subject, and you need to be able to relate the problems to the students' life, this way they will be able to retain the information better and longer. Because every student learns differently, I need to be able to adapt to their learning style, and not the other way around.
I also believe that there is more than one way to get to the right answer, when it comes to solving a math problem. There is no 'correct' way, just the way that works best for you. But no matter what, you need to show your work.

I think Susan is an amazing teacher because I have always struggled with math. Math was always a horrible subject for me because I never understood it. I hated it and it was very boring as well. When I was doing tutoring with Susan, math started to become easier and more understandable. The way teachers in schools teach it was like doing a million steps to go somewhere, meanwhile there was always a different way that only took 5 steps. She made it easier and I actually go my assignments turned in. On the other side of working so hard to make sure I was successful in school, she also always made sure that I was doing okay. Whenever I was sad she noticed and asked me what was wrong and listened when I needed it. Susan is by far my best and favorite teacher.
Susan came in and changed our lives! We were struggling with math and the frustration was building but once Susan began tutoring our son was able to work through his problems and pulled excellent grades. Our family life was greatly affected once his confidence in studies improved. We are so thankful she was his first tutor because their relationship dissolved his learned stigma about tutoring. He was upset to learn our session was over and immediately requested Susan if he ever needs help again. 20 out of 10 stars for her help!

The first lesson is what I call a 'get to know you' lesson. During this lesson, I get to know the student, their needs, wants, likes, dislikes, etc. We don't just talk about education, either, I want to know about everything (I.e. favorite color, type of music, book genre, etc.)
I listen to them and try to structure my classes around what they want and need. This helps in making the lessons more personal and meaningful to the student.
