About Tara

Hello! My name is Tara, and I am a certified teacher with over 12 years of experience in special education. I specialize in working with students who are blind or visually impaired, and I’m passionate about teaching Braille literacy in a way that’s engaging, accessible, and individualized. I hold certifications in Visual Impairments, Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD), Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD), and serve as a special education consultant. I am also ABD (All But Dissertation) in my doctoral program in Education, where my research focuses on supporting students with extensive needs. My teaching approach is student-centered, hands-on, and rooted in structure and compassion. Whether your child is just beginning to learn Braille or needs support building fluency and confidence, I provide lessons that are tailored to their learning style and pace. I believe in teaching for independence, not just instruction—helping students use Braille meaningfully in school and everyday life. Above all, I strive to create a positive, respectful learning environment where students feel successful and supported. My goal is to help every learner gain the tools they need to read, write, and thrive with confidence.

My Approach to Braille and Specialized Instruction
As a tutor and certified special education teacher with over 12 years of experience, I bring a student-centered, structured, and compassionate approach to teaching. I specialize in working with students who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with diverse learning needs across elementary grades.

Teaching Method and Techniques
My instructional style is rooted in evidence-based practices and individualized supports. I use a combination of explicit instruction, tactile learning, and multi-sensory strategies to teach Braille literacy, foundational academics, and functional skills. For Braille, this includes hands-on use of Perkins Braillers, tactile graphics, and digital Braille tools when appropriate. My goal is always to build independence, confidence, and meaningful understanding.

I emphasize:

Repetition with variation to support retention

Scaffolded instruction, moving from supported to independent tasks

Consistent routines to reduce cognitive overload

Real-life application of skills for meaningful generalization

A Typical Lesson Plan
Each session is customized based on the student's learning profile, IEP goals (if applicable), and progress. A typical 45–60 minute session includes:

Warm-Up and Review – Revisit prior skills through a short activity

Focused Instruction – Introduce or reinforce a skill (e.g., Braille contractions, reading fluency, number sense)

Guided Practice – Practice with direct support using tactile materials, print/Braille books, or manipulatives

Application Activity – Apply skills in a functional or creative context (e.g., writing a Braille note, solving a real-world math problem)

Wrap-Up and Feedback – Reflect on the session and outline next steps

What Sets Me Apart
I offer a rare blend of certifications and experience, including:

Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD)

Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD)

Visual Impairments (VI)

Consultant-level experience and doctoral-level training (ABD in Education)

My lessons are calm, predictable, and empowering. I understand how to support communication, sensory needs, assistive technology, and literacy in students who may face barriers in traditional learning environments. I work closely with families and caregivers to ensure skills carry over into daily life.
