About Aidan
My name is Aidan Monks and I am 20 years old. I grew up in Essex, England although I was educated in Cambridge where I passed 10 GCSEs, 3 A Levels and an EPQ (Extended Personal Qualification) with A*s and As (or the 9-7 equivalent). I studied English Literature, History, and Philosophy at A Level, all of which I am passionate about and capable of teaching. However, as a third-year English student at the University of St Andrews (currently ranked No.1 in the UK), I am most qualified to tutor in English: Gothic, 20th century American, European modernist, Victorian, and Romantic literature are all within my range, as well as Victorian poetry, Shakespeare, and 19th-20th century drama (reading and performance). My knowledge of historical contexts, religion and philosophy tends to influence my analysis of literature, and I would credit with my high exam scores at high school and university. Passing on any of this knowledge to students would be a privilege. On a more personal note, here a few random facts about myself: my favourite album is "Funeral" by Arcade Fire (the best song is "Wake Up"), my favourite film is "The Apartment" which always makes me laugh, and I am currently binge-watching "Attack on Titan" and loving it; I am 50% Scottish (hence my decision to study in Scotland); my current reading list stands at over 150 books, most of which I've never read before, but the one I am most excited to engage is "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" by Milan Kundera; I love baking; I spend most of my free time playing my piano. I am a genuine, empathetic, and charismatic person in addition to being thoroughly educated. As well as being knowledgeable about my subject, I believe my personality traits make me a successful teacher. I look forward to hearing from you!

When I was in school, I paid for a private tutor to help me with Maths. This tutor adapted his methods to suit my way of learning, which is active and visual (involving games, puzzles, quizzes, and educational apps). It was a hybrid (online and in-person) experience and fully capitalised on the digital tools at anyone with access to the App Store's disposal. I teach the way I would want to be taught, the way that I have found is often absent from the classroom, and have experienced in private tutorials. Where in-class teachers are often unable to engage with their students on a personal basis (which I believe happens to be critical for successful education), I like to know my students and respond to their needs, as I have experienced is very positive for learning. I like to know who my students are and what they are wanting to prioritise, and through the teaching process, understand the ways in which they absorb and digest information. One student might respond better to PowerPoint presentations than prepared worksheets or Quizlets: I will provide any/all of these where required. Of course, this is achieved over the course of teaching (1.5 hr/week) including a free introductory lesson to begin with. In school, I led study groups during exam season which accommodated all participants' learning requirements; knowing everyone involved (we were all friends) certainly helped. While I am capable of teaching KS3-4 and 11+, I prefer tutoring for GCSE and A Level exams as those are the syllabi I am most familiar with and passionate teaching. We will first cover the course contents before hopefully some additional information and exam techniques that will make you stand out from the rest. With me come extra-curricular materials that will complement your reading list and guarantee outstanding results. I look forward to working with you!

Professional and precise. He’s the best tutor I’ve ever had. Couldn’t recommend him enough.
Very clear recommendations. Doesn't just tell you what to change, but shows you how to better implement the change into your current and future essays. Very deep understanding of English literature. Helped me improve my grade from a 10 to a 15 after a single session.
