About Fred
I graduated from Ithaca College in 1980 with a Business degree and a minor in History. After completing law school at Hamline School of Law, I practiced law in Washington DC for three years, public defending indigent clients. I also worked with a consumer and environmental group before starting a twenty-year career in retail with my family in New Jersey. It was then that I moved to Saratoga Springs, NY with my wife and two sons, obtained a Master's in Education with a certification in teaching social studies to students from grades 7-12. I was a full-time substitute teacher in the public schools in the Capital region and part-time history tutor for over seven years. I love one-on-one tutoring with students as it allows me to get connected with them, gauge their learning progress and help motivate and inspire them to be successful at anything they do. I have great people skills and have fun with my students. Often, students are under lots of stress in school and my experiences have given me a strong ability to help students deal with these stresses personally and professionally. I have completed many personal development programs over the years and this further equips me to powerfully relate to my students in a very positive way.

I've been teaching and tutoring history and essay writing to middle and high school students in the Capital City region for over seven years. I love tutoring one-on-one with students because I am able to connect powerfully with them, learn their strengths and weaknesses and properly gauge their progress in learning. All students learn differently and I have great people skills from working in retail for over twenty years, practicing law and teaching in the public schools. I have developed effective learning strategies during my years tutoring and I am proficient in motivating students to take ownership of their education and have the right mindset for being successful. I have found that students are frequently stressed out over grades, tests, homework and just life in general and helping to lessen this stress often helps students succeed. I have completed many personal development programs over the years and this goes hand in hand with my teaching strategies. Getting really connected with my students and my ability to de-stress and have fun has made me a very successful tutor. I have many sources for lesson plans online and I often tailor them to a particular student's needs. They are targeted for subject and grade level and the type of learner the student is. I use visual aids frequently as many students are visual learners. I ask questions and ask students to repeat so I can check for understanding. I also emphasize writing proficiency as this skill is often neglected in school. Written communication such as emails and memos in the workplace is crucial for success in today's world. After working with me, students will be able to demonstrate learning and knowledge in a well rounded way.

I'm writing this recommendation to wholeheartedly endorse Fred as an ELL/ESL tutor. I am the coordinator for an adult ELL program at a large suburban public library. Fred serves as a volunteer ELL tutor in our program, and we are so lucky to have him on board. Our students love working with him, and report positive outcomes.
Fred exhibits exceptional patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity, creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for our diverse group of adult learners. I am from South Korea and wanted to learn to speak better English and Fred helped me become a much better speaker. His Zoom lessons are fun and engaging and very effective. I highly recommend Fred as a great tutor.

I am happy to tutor in person in the Capital Region at a location that is mutually convenient. I've tutored in Panera Bread and Starbucks locations and of course in high schools or in the student's home. As long as the distance is no longer than 20 miles, I am fine tutoring in person.
