About Martin

I'm Martin, and I love helping students get the best from themselves! I keep it real, relatable, and relevant - so you can be sure that our time is going to be well spent. I've won awards for teaching at University level, and have helped thousands of students pass exams, complete coursework, and get the grades they deserve! I'm an Academic Advisory Board Member for the American Institute of Business & Management where I consult on course design. I am happy to teach across time-zones, with current students calling in from Hong Kong, Lebanon, Dubai, London, and Salt Lake City. Check out my references from past students and let's get the work done!

Simple, relatable, and responsive. Every student learns in a different way, and every lesson needs to engage and connect with the learner - and that's what I'm all about. I keep things relatable and relevant so learners get the very best value from their time investment. Happy to prep for entrance exams (current students include boarders at Bromsgrove and Gordon's), and work with students through GCSEs, A-levels and BTECs. I have students on programmes with Oxford, Harvard, the TIO Business School MBA programme, and in Russell Group establishments in the UK. I've also supported kids and adults from community colleges and local schools. I help Undergrads and Post-grads with problem solving and making sense of the curriculum - including relating it to real-world scenarios. Or we can simply spend time with students of all levels working through classroom challenges. Teaching in academia since 2015, been in training and young people teaching since 2000. Let me know in advance what the challenges are, and we can get the most value from the time together by working through, understanding, and then resolving any learning issues you may have. I have had notable success in supporting students with SEN, those who have 'rubbish teachers' at school, and those who are just grumpy teenagers - we work together to overcome challenges. ADHD myself, so understand the challenges that it brings

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

About the summer of 2012 I was getting more and more involved in the marketing aspect of work, and was devouring knowledge to be at the forefront of social media marketing. It was an exciting time but the knowledge was very unstructured at the time, and as I developed a proficiency I had more business owners ask me about assisting their teams with it.

So both knowledge and teaching grew together, and I just knew that I loved the training and tutoring side!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach across the Business syllabus, with a focus on Undergrad and Post-grad students looking to gain certainty from their class work that lectures don't quite fill.

I've been lucky to teach at a variety of different institutions in the UK and abroad.

My style also lends itself well to BTEC, A-Level, and GCSE students looking to make sense of their curriculums.

I've taught across Marketing, Strategy, Supply Chain, Logistics, and Sales Management - and when paired with 10+ years of running my own businesses I am confident and capable across the whole spectrum.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

His name is Guy Hawkins, and he taught that the stomach lining of a sheep is full of furry finger-like growths - and then he threw that piece of lining against the window where it stuck for the rest of the lesson - that was over 30 years ago and still it stands out!
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

You have to have the knowledge for sure, but that's not enough!

Being relatable, empathetic, and engaging carry just as much weight as pure knowledge. I want my students to leave each class having really got to grips with the subject, case study, or theory - and to know how to put those new ideas back onto paper and into use in the real-world!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I like to play a game of paper-scissor-stone with my students during one of the classes, to show how powerful marketing can be. I can play it in person, in a theatre, or online, and the best win rate I have is beating approx 297/300 people simultaneously.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Keeping relevant is by far the biggest challenge, the text books use case studies of defunct companies as role-models of success stories (hello! BlackBerry and Kodak!!), so ensuring that the examples you use to teach with are both engaging and relevant - but that's also super fun to keep it fresh.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching and building confidence in learners, it's such a great feeling knowing that you are making an impact on someone's immediate and long-term life!

In terms of specificity, I really enjoy working with students and showing that marketing isn't just social media (even though that expertise launched my career), and that there's SO.MUCH.MORE to it than that!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Having a passion for teaching, working with students across all intersections of life, and helping to build brains and the next generation (and the next) of business superstars - it's a pretty great feeling!
