About Maya
I’m a chess tutor with over 5 years of experience helping learners sharpen their skills and deepen their love for the game. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Studies with a Concentration in Cognitive Development, and my focus is on teaching chess for practical, competitive, and recreational contexts. I specialize in helping students improve decision-making, pattern recognition, and board control under real game pressure. My lessons are ideal for beginners who want to build solid fundamentals, as well as intermediate players looking to develop winning strategies. I use scenario-based learning, including real game simulations, opening and endgame drills, and timed tactical challenges. Together, we practice common situations—from avoiding blunders to converting small advantages—so students feel prepared and confident at every stage of play. I introduce concepts like board vision, positional sacrifices, and time management in a clear, engaging way. We’ll work through annotated games, puzzle-solving, and competitive mindset coaching. My goal is to help you think like a chess player—not just react, but truly plan ahead. I’m very good with The Tournament Player and The Hobbyist, and I support them in finding their unique approach to the game. With the right tools and steady progress, you'll build confidence across the board. Let’s connect through the joy of chess and elevate your play—move by move.

My teaching approach is rooted in strategy, reflection, and building real understanding of the game. I focus on helping students talk through their thought process, evaluate positions clearly, and make confident decisions on the board. Lessons often include real game scenarios, where we pause to discuss tactics, calculate variations, and explore alternative plans. I place a strong emphasis on current strategies in tournament play and how to apply classic principles in modern games.
We dive into annotated master games, explore famous endgames, and debate the strengths and weaknesses of different styles—from aggressive openings to solid positional play. You’ll learn how to analyze your own games, express your reasoning, and grow through respectful critique. I’m very good with The Heritage Learner and The Hobbyist, and I help them develop a strategic voice that’s clear, thoughtful, and unique.
We’ll explore ideas like initiative, tempo, imbalance, and sacrifice in practical ways. Together, we build strong board awareness and the ability to adapt mid-game. My goal is for you to think beyond the next move and speak confidently about why it matters. You’ll engage in chess discussions that sharpen both your skills and your strategic thinking.
