About Andy
I have spent the past 25 years working with many schools and educational institutions, as well as privately as a tutor. In that time, I have helped many hundreds of students over many thousands of sessions. Since March 2020, I have spent almost all of my teaching time in an online environment and have developed tools and techniques that work well over the internet to assist students outside of my geographical base.
I am also a believer in living to learn. Beyond my studies in mathematics and physics, I have formally studied logic, computer science, philosophy, economics, and law. I also have a deep interest in history, critical reasoning, and public policy.

Understanding can only be built subjectively, that is, by the person who wants to understand. As a tutor, I see my role as a guide or facilitator to that understanding. When one of my students is having difficulty with a particular problem or concept I will go back through underlying concepts with them to find the root of the problem.
Mathematics and science can seem like a set of algorithms, procedures, and rules that students need to learn and apply. However, all of these are based on fundamental principles that students often misunderstand, or lack awareness of. When students have gaps in this fundamental understanding, they are forced to rely on these superficial tools that are so often mistaken as 'math' or 'science', and they lack the ability to reason through problems that deviate even slightly from what they have seen in their classes.
I use Socratic questioning guided by my deep knowledge of the subjects I teach to draw out the nature of students' understanding. From there I will guide my students through the necessary concepts to allow them to build a strong foundation for further understanding. This often involves deep reasoning which will start from first principles. To ensure sufficient progress, I ask that students demonstrate their ability by solving relevant problems and explaining their reasoning.
Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, I will provide a sympathetic ear to all my students about their difficulties in their studies. Everyone, at some point in their studies, will come to a point where understanding stops and confusion sets in. When this happens - and often, in mathematics, this happens at a young age - it can be damaging. When students are subsequently moved on to topics of greater difficulty and complexity in later grades, damage is piled on with predictable results. When students come to me, I do my best to work with them where they are - academically and emotionally.
I have worked with, and hope to continue to work with students of all ages (my youngest students were 4 years old, and my oldest was in his 70s!) and all levels from kindergarten to late undergraduate mathematics.
