About Ali

My name is Ali Jassam and I'm a Mathematics graduate from the University of Cambridge, with a degree in Mathematics and a Masters in Astrophysics. Having grown up in an environment where studying was seen as important to success, I have worked very hard to excel academically, achieving top grades in GCSE/A level and challenging myself further through national competitions and Olympiads and studying at Cambridge University. Ever since year 11, I have been an active maths tutor and I am very passionate about teaching others. Seeing a student's face glow after finally understanding a concept, or after solving a hard problem, is a very rewarding experience. I hope to help others see that mathematics is a fun endeavour and mathematics examinations are to be excited for, not fear.

About the lesson

I have a very unique teaching method that is highly effective, with a success rate that rivals top private schools. Every student of mine receives a personalised prep strategy to help them succeed and perform at the highest level for their exam, competition or interview. I also create unique resources, such as hundreds of original practice questions for admission tests (MAT, TMUA, PAT, ESAT) and interview practice questions. Over 30 past students of mine have received offers at Oxford and Cambridge and have successfully passed their tough interviews and admission tests (STEP/MAT/TMUA). I tutor mathematics of various levels, all the way from GCSE to A level/IB and Oxbridge Maths admission (tutoring students for MAT, STEP 2/STEP 3 and interviews). I also teach students for Physics and Engineering admission tests (PAT, ESAT), as well as Physics and Engineering interviews at Imperial and Oxbridge. I also tutor students for Maths and Physics Olympiads and competitions (UKMT, BMO, BPHO Physics and Astrophysics etc). I have also taught a class of year 11 students GCSE FM in a few months, of which they have achieved top grades. I have also tutored students for AS/A2 Maths and Further Maths, and notable improvements were 2 students who received E/U in their AS mocks respectively, and then got A (highest grade in AS) 2 months later in the real exams, as a result of my teaching. Moreover, I have personally self-taught GCSE and A level Maths and FM, achieving 9s and A*s. I sat A level Maths in year 11 and Further Maths in year 12. I have also won Golds in numerous UKMT Maths Challenges and Physics/Chemistry challenges and national Olympiads. I have also received a Jack Petchey award in year 12 for my teaching. The way I teach is using a 2-step process. Step 1 - understanding the material In this step, we go over the content and I teach the student how to understand it deeply. We go over many examples and discuss the motivation for each topic. This is very effective since understanding is the first key to success in Mathematics and discussing proofs/motivations (even when not examinable) will help the student remember the methods and steps better and not forget it in examination settings. Step 2 - mastering the examination In this step, we move on from understanding the raw mathematics and prepare specifically for the exam. Exam specification is what helped me excel in all of my exams, interviews and competitions. In this step, we go over the specification together and work through all of the past questions and assessment material. I will also devise an exam strategy based on the exam board, the exam specification and what the examiners could conceivably ask. Doing this has enabled me to become extremely proficient at A level Mathematics, to the point where I could do an A2 Maths paper in 20 minutes in year 11. That was solely a result of my high exam specification, of which I will train my students to do. In terms of lessons, I am highly flexible. Typical lengths of lessons are 1-2 hours but I am open to longer sessions. I tutor online using an iPad and video call the students on Zoom/Teams. I will assign homework to be completed, which we will go over in the subsequent lesson and discuss the solutions and alternative ways to solve the problems.
